On This Day in History April 19, 1956: The Brooklyn Dodgers would defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 in 10-innings in front of 12,214 fans at Roosevelt Stadium. Roosevelt Stadium was located at Droyer's Point in Jersey City, New Jersey. This would be the first ever Major League game played in the state of New Jersey. Why would the Dodgers play a home game in New Jersey?
At the time the Dodgers were trying to negotiate a new stadium deal with the City of New York and used the premise of playing a total of 15 “home games” at Roosevelt Stadium in 1956 and 1957.
As we all know, the Dodgers would leave for the greener pastures of Los Angeles after the 1957 season. Roosevelt Stadium would continue to host a series of minor league Baseball franchises in addition to a variety of events including high school Baseball, soccer and musical concerts.
Roosevelt Stadium would eventually be demolished in 1985 to be replaced by a gated community which was completed in 1987.
