Once Upon a Time in Space character designs!

Some notes:

Since the mechs themselves had a few Disney references (the seven survivor’s dwarf attributes, Adam, mentions of the sleeping beauty fairies, etc.) I didn’t feel quite as bad paying small homage to the Disney designs. I had a hard enough time finding enough to fit together without trying to block out Disney.

Music inspo: since a lot of the songs are based on sea shanties, and as the first album, it’s not a surprise this one has a pirate theme. I think the mechs started with a certain vibe and carried it over into the album.

The fashion style is meant to be a mix of Middle Ages (the fairy tales) and 1500s (pirate theme).

I know I have not posted anything in regards to OUATIS animated, so here's a little update: I have created paper storyboards for Snow's Flight, Pump Shanty, and part of Rose Red, and I am currently working on digitising the storyboards and animating them, so I should be able to upload some actual progress soon.

Anyways, I also created these semi-realistic/oil painting inspired portraits of Snow, Cinders, and Rose for a 6 hour long presentation I'm making for my friends about the mechs, so have these until I have enough of the animation done to share:

in 'The Twins' Jonny mentions that Snow has long hair and Rose has short hair. I really enjoy the amount of physical difference in this, as well as the practicality/symbolism of it. Snow is a diplomat fighting for peace, long hair represents freedom (what she is working toward) requires a lot of self-care, time, etc. to maintain things that a well-loved diplomat would likely have a lot of. compare this to Rose who is a solider, they likely would not have the resources to be able to maintain this hair as well as the inefficiency of long hair combat (this is coming from experience, my hair BARLEY goes past my shoulders and I still need to tie it up while doing martial arts).

HOWEVER, then their positions are somewhat swapped. Rose is now the one in King Cole's court (though she's, y'know, kidnapped and unconscious. the point still stands.) and Snow is now the one on the battlefield, as General White. so, wouldn't it be cool if while in her glass case, Rose's hair grew out, and for whatever reason Snow's has been shortened? (Personally, I think this would happen during the attack, during Snow's Flight Jonny say she "lost much of herself in the process" and I've always interpreted this as her like, loosing limbs and shit, leading to her needing prosthetics as a general, and also could be a good point for her to have the hair like, torn off in some way. she simply kept it short cuz it was more efficient. also feel like having both her and Rose's change in hair being nonconsensual helps to emphasize that this role swap was something they were thrust into rather than fully chosen by them.)

Fundamentally the interesting thing about Rose OUATIS is her position right at the intersection of privilege and exploitation

there's just no way that cinders and rose would have been happy if they'd gotten married normalstyle and lived on new constantinople because even though the love was there i can't see cinders happy living under the kings rule and pretending everything is fine and i can't see rose understanding why cinders is unhappy. the problem of the rose reds aside
