Does anyone else make really elaborate AUs. Like "Oh hey neat swap au!! The characters are really fun in this Situation!! but what if they do this instead. and also maybe this AU combined too." and its really fun and cool and awesome and smart but then when you think about writing it the idea immediately turns to shit because literally no one is going to read a modern swap everybody lives/nobody dies ghost hunting werewolf au and now you just have to keep it all to yourself. I think some people need to learn that EVEN THOUGH "proshipping" by definition just means anti-harassment over ships, regardless of how problematic they are, blah blah blah, that is NOT what it has grown to be. Hounding people over getting the definition "wrong" is not going to change what the term has turned into, and the PRO in proshipping has always been there. If you're anti-harassment? just say you're anti-harassment. I'm anti-harassment!! Because that's fucked up!! But if you say you're a proshipper, I'm STILL going to block you the same as I would with someone shipping a grown adult and a minor. Respectfully, proshipping has changed. Language has always been fluid, and getting hung up over a word like that just makes me think that you're trying to fit in with the predators and zoophiles and anyone else who thinks doing these things is positive, or that "fiction doesn't affect reality!!" It does. And the fact that there are people that have DIED over these kinds of triggers or groomings or anything involving that kinds of things that PROSHIPPERS DEFEND should be proof enough.
I'm just saying here. Something about him wanting to move on. Like yeah, if I was a mysterious rotting ghost thing for unknown reasons I'd probably think about that too. But there's no fear about it, unless towards the fact that he can't "truly" die.
Something about him being 2k in gambling debt, which I honestly don't even know how much that would really be in the 1930's, but it must be a pretty insane amount. Which makes me wonder about why. That, and his smoking problem. Common around that time, but. You get the point.
Something about him also mouthing off Edwin, mind you, without the advice from Jack, without Arthur's reasoning for the bitterness or the lack of fear. Something about him never looking for help (which again, 2k is a LOT of money, so I can't blame him there. But still something to mention) or telling anyone even the vaguest thing about it until prompted.
Something about why he saw Arthur and his anger and his self-pity and his seeming inevitable death at the time, and still decided to sit and talk and poke and prod. There's probably something there about his barely hidden nosiness and the fact he just. showed up and decided to? Without any worry. Something about how he stuck around Arthur and picked him up off the pavement and kept doing it, and how I cannot fathom why someone, supposedly so upbeat and confident would keep coming back to someone like him. Because while we do know he's a good guy, there's no denying what a jackass he must've been back then.
Do you think Parker saw something in him? Maybe something like himself? Do you think about how even after the years of knowing Arthur, he still brushed off that debt? Why do you think he was encouraging Arthur to move on? To, maybe, be more independent? There's just. Something about that.

Until threshold, we always saw him through Arthur's eyes, and how he thought of him as an upbeat kind of grounding presence, so that's how I analyzed him back then. But now that we're seeing him from other perspectives, the things that never fit in with that view like his gambling and why he stuck with Arthur in the first place are starting to make sense to me with that view.

Ok this is less analysis and more headcanons for me, but shhhh..... idk how to write fanfiction properly so I just talk about my idea of them here shhhhhh..............

I honestly view him as more self-destructive than?? Ok I don't think he was going to pointedly kill himself. Which I mean, there's a VERY thin line between the two, but I think its an important distinction for him.
Every time I think about this I instantly go to his family. He clearly has a good relationship with them, especially his sister. I think he'd feel guilty about it, because of that. He has a perfectly good family, friends, a job. He has too many connections, what happens to them when he's gone? The debt doesn't just disappear either. If he offed himself, the fallout would be on him. Being a detective, that gives him more responsibility and people to think about. If he doesn't get this case done, well, what happens to that missing girl? that fraud? that unhappy couple? I think it keeps him up. And maybe, when he doesn't have those cases or those reminders, he ends up in places like Edwin's, or, places like where he met Artie.
I think about them allottttt as u can tell..... blinks my eyes. The thing Arthur is that to anyone else, he would've looked like a ticking time bomb. Or, maybe already another corpse. Alcohol poisoning is a serious thing, y'know. And it's Arkham, a guy like him doesn't last long being so willing to get in a fight or swear someone out. Parker might not look like that, but that's why he's not bleeding out in some alley already. I think seeing him and talking with him gave him some sense of companionship, or repeatability at the least. Dead men walking, just that one isn't rotting on the outside. Maybe seeing Arthur keep showing up, or running into him was what made him start thinking. What made him seek him out, what made his savior complex start up again. Or, what made him willing to keep showing up too.
Really, even after his death, they still parallel each other. In the same way Parker guided him, he guided John. In the same way Parker kept picking him up from bedrock, Arthur kept finding John's humanity, and was always so desperate for John to as well. Parker kept picking him up from bedrock, because maybe if this skinny bastard wallowing in whiskey and regret could keep living, so could he. At least until Arthur could hold himself up on his own.
But, Parker didn't let Arthur pick him back up like he and John. Parker seemed like the more open of the two, but at least with time Arthur told him about Faroe. Parker just painted the pretty picture of his job, his family, whatever else. Then he scrapped the smoking and gambling and whatever made that even start, whether its a dead brother or partner or something else entirely. Parker never gave anything back like Arthur did, nothing of substance anyway. That's why I think Arthur was right, when he said he wasn't sure if they could've saved him. If it was the crime they investigated, the smoking, the mob, himself? Too many factors, too little time. Too many things that built up before they even knew one another.
Parker Yang had a good life. That's what makes him an even more intriguing character to me. You never see suicidal characters these days without them being completely in the gutter or shunned or something of the like, or at least without having a "good reason." (ewww ew ew ew I'm sorry even typing that out makes me feel icky) Which, obviously those characters are important, since some people relate to them too!! but you don't see a lot of representation for people like Parker. I knowww it isn't CANON canon, but I reallyyy hope Harlan says something about it, cause. listen gals stable guys do NOT do it like Peter Parker Yang.
Idk he makes me happy.......... He's so interesting and so silly and so nice and maybe he deserves to go a little apeshit actually and maybe that's why he was the one who taught Arthur to intimidate people cause maybeee he needed to do that sometimes . Parker Yang u deserve the world please don't be an ominous impersonation of yourself projected by an eldritch god
Malevolent Threshold is making me realize that maybe Arthur "pathetic wet kitten" Lester might not actually be THAT pathetic and that he was going through significant mental hurdles and also getting stabbed and every bone in his body broken and honestly going insane. That being said he does NOT need to whimper that much when he walks up stairs
