Roslagen

Roslagen is the denomination of the Uppland archipelago and mainland facing the water (more or less the yellow part on the map). Its’ boarders are a bit vague and it’s not an official administrative area but rather a historic military (fleet) division. Its’ unofficial “capital” is considered to be Norrtälje (a lot of stuff are named after Roslagen there). In my experience growing up in Roslagen I wouldn’t say there’s a strong Roslagen identity but maybe I just lived to close to Stockholm and people who live further out may relate more to it. 

Etymology and descendants

The name Roslagen comes from the old name of the area Roden (from the Old Swedish roðer “rowing” since that was the main mode of transportation in the area) + lagen (plural determinative form of lag “group of people”), this second part having today been reinterpreted as determinative singular. This area was supposed to supply rowers in times of war and Roslagen would’ve originally meant “the teams of rowers”. 

What I find interesting is the descendants of this term. There’s strong evidence that the area Roslagen has given name to 2 other geographical areas. 

(1) Sweden in different Balto-Finnic and Sami languages (Finnish Ruotsi, Northern Sami Ruoŧŧa etc.). The reason being that most Swedes that came to Finland came from Roslagen, the name seems to thereafter have been borrowed from Finnish to the other languages.

(2) Russia: the name having probably spred to various languages through Byzantine Greek. The theory being that Vikings from Roslagen traveled through what is now Russia and founded the city Veliky Novgorod. These vikings would later be part of the Kievan Rus’ (”Rus” coming from Roslagen). 

In Livvi, a language spoken around the area of St. Petersburg, Ruočči came to mean lutheran Finland/Sweden (Finland was a part of Sweden during this time), due to the Swedes attempts to force protestantism on the traditionally Ortodox community while colonizing the area. 

In summary it seems that we people from Roslagen (apparently the correct demonym is rospigg but I’ve never heard anyone use that in real life so idk) historically haven’t liked it enough here and just gone east.

Philip von Schantz (Feb. 21, 1928 - 1998) was a Swedish artist and professor at the Royal Academy in Stockholm.

He began as a hyper-realist painter in the 60s, specializing in large still life paintings, but later he began to stylize and reduce his compositions to simple figures and colors.
