Clementine half sat in her bed, blanket tucked all the way up to her chin while she hugged her two dolls to her chest - one resembling her Uncle Kilowog and the other a unicorn. She watched the window with a racing heart, faster than the rain tormenting on her window.
Then a flash. She grasped her toys closer, though impossible. Then the thunder clapped. She ducked underneath her blanket. Body quivering, she whimpered. Tears stinging her eyes as her skin prickled with fear. Where were her Mommy and Daddy? Her superheroes?
The wind has started knocking then bashing on her windows. It eerily sounded like it urging her to come to play, demanding and screaming. Her imagination ran wilder. Shadows turning to monsters and clawed hands scraping the floor. She placed her unicorn to her mouth, in hopes of quieting the sound. She didn't want to get noticed. If she was quiet enough, they would all ignore her, that's it! She would stay still until her Mommy and Daddy found her.
The thunderstorm laughed. She squeaked. They turned to sobs wracking her body. If she was as fast as her Uncle Barry, she can brave the dark corridor. Be fast enough so she wouldn't fall victim to anything. Fast enough to leap herself onto the warm embrace of her parents. But no, she's stuck here with no escape. And her sobs can't be contained any longer.
The room was lit. Clementine opened her eyes, strained from shutting them too tight. She lifted her blanket slightly. She just needed to confirm it!
“Sweetie, shouldn't you be asleep?”
Her heart skipped a beat. Without hesitation, she threw the blanket off her. Her tired eyes met her mother's worried ones.
Still donning her superhero costume, she approached her with her arms ready for Clementine. Clementine wrapped her tinier ones around her mother's neck. Sobbings turned to hiccups the moment her mother placed kisses all over her head and her hand rubbed conforming shaped onto her back. Clementine has been saved!
After trying to calm your distressed daughter, and she was floating between sleep and consciousness, you make your way to your room. You continued to whisper sweet loving words to her while rubbing her back.
You sighed when you saw your husband sprawled on the bed, snoring. Walking to your side of the bed, you tried placing Clementine down. Tried to being the keyword.
Her eyes shot open and her grip tightened the moment she was tilting backward. Eyes pleading at you and mouth quivering, you immediately brought her back into your embrace.
“It's okay now sweetie, nothing will get you okay? Mommy will return fast alright? You'll be with Daddy just for a second.”
She quickly shook her head and held on tighter to your shirt. With a troubled heart, you maneuvered yourself out of your clothes with her clinging on. She watched you with eyebrows furrowed and mouth pouted. Despite being bleary-eyed, she stubbornly refused to sleep. Even with your reassurances. The fear etched onto her actions caused your heart to lurch. And mad at your husband for not being awake when your daughter needed him.
When you slipped into bed, she was on the edge of sleep. You know with just a prompt, she would be out like a light.
“Sweetie, why don't you sleep. Mommy will be here. So will Daddy. Nothing will get to you, I promise,” you kissed her temple.
She yawned, “Promise?” With drooping eyes, she looked at you and held out her tiny pinkie.
You chuckled, intertwining your pinkies, “I promise with all my heart.”
She nodded in approval. Burying herself in your chest, she slept.
Despite sleep calling to you, you had the urge just watch over her. Caressing her tiny head. You snuggled her small body further into you. With a kiss to the head, you slept with arms and legs protecting her being.
You peeked through one of your eyes. Hal was turning in his sleep. His brain was registering that you were already in bed with him so automatically his arms gravitated towards your body.
You took a spare pillow and slammed it onto his face. He spluttered to consciousness, “What was that for?”
“Nothing. I just felt like it.”
“You - ” He stopped the moment he registered that you both weren't alone. “What's Clem doing here?”
“It's raining, Hal.”
“Is she sick?” He raised an eyebrow as he placed his hand on her forehead. “She was with me all night long. I would've known.” He pouted.
“Sometimes Hal, I wonder why I even marry you in the first place. Or bother at all.”
He pouted but did not argue any further. His arms encircled your little family, warmth embracing the trio.
