I've loved Jett Reno since we were introduced to her in "Discovery" but the SFA season finale was really her finest hour. She is such a great example of teaching and mentoring and leadership in that one (and is also, as always, very funny to boot.) A wonderful storyline for her and Tig Notaro knocked it out of the park!

Good finale, I liked it!

Reno killed it as acting captain (her girlfriend should have been in more tho)

SAM killed it at being SAM (and basically saving everyone and everything, let's be real)

Caleb future engineer confirmed was excellent

Tatiana Maslany and Holly Hunter were awesome

and Nus Braka was actually fun for the most part ("noone wants to hear about your dead son again" took me out for real).

Oh! And I loved how there was that thing that Discovery did when someone makes a speech about friendship and love and then they do close ups of everyone on the bridge looking touched, except the people we see in the episodes are people we actually care about and not ensigns numbers 1-5, plus Tilly I guess. Great improvement.

The punches were good. I would have loved me some murder but that should not be the Star Trek way (I do remember those dead pirates in episode 1, don't worry), so yeah, it's fine, it's nice.

The year book quotes and photos were adorable! (except for a certain someone missing)

The Athena atrium set vandalized felt just the right amount of tacky, if you know what I mean. I honestly commend them for saving money in smart ways.

Things I am on the fence about:

the threat somehow felt less huge even tho nothing technically changed and that is a good thing but also a bit of a let down from the build up from episode 9. Idk, I'm in two minds on this one.

I'm also unsure what I think about Venari Ral News Network and in a broader sense about the politics of basically everything, I think I will read what smarter people say about it before taking any sides

Jay-Den and Darem didn't really do much. Genesis got her dream of captaincy realized for a second and she and SAM patched things up (that scene was contrived af tho, from multiple standpoints), Tarima got her big space bat moment and talked things through with Caleb (although his insistance her disability is a gift, despite a lot of evidence of it causing her harm, felt a bit... well, ableist is a strong word but yeah), but Jay-Den and Darem were just sort of there, and Jay-Den was in another room completely for huge chunks of the episode. I have no doubt the shippers are pissed.

Anisha being inside the academy... I know they are in space atm, so there are not that many options but it still felt too soon. Especially with her waving back at Ake. Too much.

Things I disliked:

where the fuck is Kelrec and why didn't he get his own entry into the credit year book??? (no, i don't care he's not Starfleet Academy, he is Starfleet Academy's honorary boyfriend)

Anyway, I think it's probably a good sign I only have a petty personal thing to actually complain about in the bad section. Honestly a better finale than expected. They tied it nicely with threads from the whole season, it was mostly about talking and science (as my regulars know, I just don't vibe with Trek doing war) and a lot of the characters had things to contribute. I have notes, but overall I am very happy with what was done.

my SFA mini-reviews after re-watch

Kids These Days: 7/10 Good introduction to all our main characters, way too long with too many unnecessary action sequences (Caleb falls with that shuttle for like three minutes and does anyone remember it? no, we do not), the hair, also Ake just kills people and no one in the writing room found it strange

Beta Test: 8/10 We are at the Academy, yay! Kelrec's first appearance, where he meets his barefoot future wife. Cool politics in the spirit of Star Trek, deaf representation and very nice costumes. Tarima did not charm me in this episode and Caleb was kind of annoying

Vitus Reflux: 9/10 We meet the War College kids and they are delightful, I love the heist, we see Kelrec's office and his tea, also Nahla's cute pyjamas, and Jett and Lura as coaches for calica. Great vibes. The Calica scenes didn't interest me that much tho.

Vox in Excelso: 10/10 First properly serious episode, excellent addition to the Klingons, great stuff for Jay-Den's story, very Trek solution with many real life parallels, also the good people of tumblr got Obel Wochak out of this and who am I to not acknowledge their win in life?

Series Acclimation Mil: 10/10 SAM is a fantastic character, I loved the stylistic choices reflecting her personality, I loved the ambiguity of the Sisko mystery and the conversation about memory, legacy and destiny, and of course, this is the episode prime for Nahla/Kelrec and every scene they share brings me closer to god

Come, Let's Way: 9/10 What a shockingly bold episode. They killed a kid! For real! Nus Braka's best episode, that man doesn't miss here, not once, and his and Nahla's scenes are just fantastic, oh my god. The furies were kind of lame, ngl, I am also still not sold on Tarima being Jean Grey actually.

Ko'Zeine: 6/10 Better on a second watch, has nice costumes, good friendship moments between Caleb and Genesis, Lura's hilarious phone call with Jett... Would have worked fine in a longer season, felt like two B plots without anything truly substantial going on.

The Life of the Stars: 7/10 I was annoyed with the pseudo-theatre therapy last time, hated it on re-watch. Tilly comes off as too forceful and mean at times, it's painful how she just targets Tarima in front of everyone... Not a good teaching, not a good therapy. Still a good episode because of SAM, the Doctor and Nahla. That was fantastic, top tier acting, concept, writing, also Holly's hair is just *chef's kiss*

300th Night: 8/10 Fun, actually. For a first chapter to the finale, it is very enjoyable, lot of fun moments, the last time with my boy Kelrec (I think about them standing that close my every waking moment), Anisha is found, Darem gets beaten while smiling, good vibes. It is still just a set up tho.

Rubincon: 7/10 More fun, Jett Reno in top form, some fantastic acting from Holly and Tatiana, economically wise usage of the atrium. Like half of the kids don't have much to do, the plot doesn't make sense in several places and then it fumbles the messaging. Also my boy is not in the cute year book credits and I will still throw hands about that.

This means that mathematically my score for season 1 of SFA is 8/10, which is not accurate, because it is actually ♥/10, which equals to everything ever.

Hadn't watched the last two episodes of "Starfleet Academy" until now due to work busyness and after seeing them I am even more pissed at Paramount+ for cancelling it. I love these characters so much! I need to see their full four-year adventure... 😢
