REYLO AND THE DARKEST MINDS, SOMETHING ABOUT THINK...
Post written by ME. The animated gifs shown AREN’T MINE and DON’T BELONG TO ME IN ANY WAY.
Tonight I saw "The Darkest Minds" 2018 movie, directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, transposition of the novel of the same name by Alexandra Bracken. Movie has little in common with Star Wars and Reylo, but has similar themes: family, its lack and, like looking for it, can be a weakness. In this post, however, I would like to respond to fans who accuse Kylo Ren to ABUSE to Rey and HANDLE HER. I recommend you: watch this movie, Clancy Gray character (played very well by Patrick Gibson) and you will understand WHAT IS REAL HANDLING and ABUSE. In movie second half, protagonist Ruby Daly, possessing power to enter and manipulate others minds, is between two fires: on one hand, there is Liam Stewart, a young telekinetic, famous for saving hundreds of guys with powers, but with as many enemies, especially ‘cause he doesn’t trust and doesn’t believe anyone. On other side, there is Clancy Gray, President’s son, endowed with same, identical power of Ruby. Clancy is a secret CAMP boss, where boys with powers can live safe and serene.
Ruby and Clancy are only ones who have power to enter and manipulate others minds. So, when Clancy offers Ruby to help her to learn and control power, she accepts enthusiastic, happy to share this gift with someone. Sweet and kind, Clancy explains to Ruby he want to use their power to create a new world, in which young people with powers can live in safety, "changing people’s minds". Ruby diligently follows Clancy's lessons and, when he asks her permission to enter her mind to see her most painful and secret memory, Ruby accepts, relieved to be able to confide in someone... at ten age, without even being aware of it, of what she did, Ruby erased her memory from parents' minds, who no longer recognized her and didn’t even remember having a daughter ... let's stop for a moment.
CLANCY REQUESTS PERMISSION TO RUBY TO ENTER INTO HER MIND. HE DOES THIS WITH SWEETNESS AND KINDNESS. The same ones he uses 'cause Ruby agrees to take his hand. Especially, weapon used by Clancy is EMPATHY. At first lesson he shows Ruby terrible experiments memory carried out on him, with his father's permission, to try to cure him:
On the contrary, Kylo Ren doesn’t ask for "permission" to enter Rey's head, he ENTER, breaking through the door. He rummages in Rey's intimate memories not for empathy, but to give her a POWER PROOF and when he offers himself as Rey’s master, he does it during a lightsaber’s duel:
Nevertheless, we know from Snoke Kylo feels COMPASSION for Rey. Kylo doesn’t tell Rey to combine their powers to create a better and safer world, but to create a NEW ORDER. No embellishments with Kylo, but brutal TRUTH.
Clancy confides to Ruby that he’s interested in a capacity only she possesses: erasing memories from others minds. Clancy wants to learn this technique and to help him, Ruby allows him to enter her mind and study her most painful memory: night she erased her memory from her parents' minds. Learning what he wanted, Clancy changes: blocks Ruby in bed, trying to kiss her by force, but she hits him and runs away. Alert Liam, he, Ruby, Chubs and little Zu, try to escape, but Clancy blocks them and ... he isn’t alone. Clancy turns out to be head of everything, even concentration camps in which Ruby, Liam and Zu were locked up. Organization boys are his subjects and, for years, Clancy has locked up his father, throwing key away. Using his power, Clancy blocks Liam, starting to beat him savagely, while his men keep Ruby locked up. Clancy tells Ruby not to worry, he will erase these bad memories and all that he doesn’t like from her mind, creating perfect Ruby, one he wants... Clancy will leave Liam alive, obviously, so he can see how he has shaped Ruby...
I know all this can remember "Star Wars. Episode VII. The Force Awakens" final’s part, when furious, Kylo blocks Rey and Finn escape into forest, putting her out of combat and seriously injuring Finn but, in reality, there is a BIG DIFFERENCE: Kylo NEVER HAS TO BE THAT HE ISN’T. When Rey insults him, calling him MONSTER, Kylo said YES. HE’S A MONSTER:
Kylo DOESN’T block Finn to beat him quietly, but he fights with him in a normal duel, even though he knows he’s stronger. Kylo doesn’t block Rey from soldiers to show her like he hurt people she loves. When Kylo kills Han, he ignores Rey is present and doesn’t kill Han to hurt Rey, but for PERSONAL REASONS, in which Rey has nothing to do with it. Kylo ISN’T ANYWHERE, he has always come on field in FIRST PERSON, FIGHTING WITHOUT TRICKS. Unlike Clancy, Kylo Ren immediately shows the WORST OF HIMSELF to Rey. She knows very well who is in front of her and what Kylo is capable of, so much so first time she sees Kylo, thanks to Force’s connection, she shoots him:
In my opinion, real MANIPULATION and ABUSE is that of CLANCY who, first, creates a real EMPATHY’S relationship with Ruby, causing her, deliberately to believe she has finally found a family, and then stabbing her behind. Kylo advises Rey her search for family in anyone is her WEAK POINT. Not to mention Clancy plans to treat Ruby as a toy, a doll, to be programmed as he wants.
Strange thing is very few parallels offered by The Darkest Minds movie with Star Wars, affect Ruby and LIAM, considered an HERO by boys, a thorn in side by organization, especially for League, of which Liam was a former member he hates it:
"She told me the League wants to help me, then I ran away, but ... if I was wrong, if they helped me?"
"You don’t need The League’s help, ok?"
"My brother entered in the League first and he is always right, so I went in too. They promised us a tide. They taught us to use powers. At first on stupid things, like objects or puppets, then they showed us how an arm breaks, but I didn’t want to become an enlisted soldier. I prefer to die, but I won’t go back "
[...]
"Those of the League aren’t your friends!"
(Ruby and Liam, from "The Darkest Mind" movie)
“You mean the murderers, traitors and thieves you call friends?”
“I see the island... and Han Solo... You feel like he's the father you never had. He would have disappointed you”
(Rey and Kylo Ren, from "Star Wars. Episode VII: The Force Awakens" movie)
"What is that?"
"It's a birthday present my father gave me. It's the last thing he gave me. It gave me the impression that I was not alone ... "
"Hey, you're not alone"
(Liam and Ruby, from the movie "The Darkest Mind")
(Kylo Ren and Rey, “Star Wars. Episode VIII. The Last Jedi”)
Almost kiss:
Darkest Minds:
It’s interesting, in the end, Liam becomes "Thousand Enemies Prince", while to protect and help them, Ruby walks "towards LIGHT":
