Chapter 3: The Ascent
The Dementors circled outside her door. She heard the rasp of their breathing, felt their presence like pressure against her skull, that familiar attempt to breach her Occlumency shields and drain whatever joy they could find. They would find nothing beyond the outer layer she permitted them to sense. The technique she had perfected over thirteen years no longer resembled what the Dark Lord had taught her. It was entirely own.
Her eyes closed and it came as naturally as breathing. the bubble that existed in the space between thought and memory. She felt everything fully within those boundaries, and what the Dementors encountered when they pressed against her mind held no real warmth for them to drain.
She had not understood why until the third year, when she realised that the space she had built inside her mind radiated something the Dementors could not feed upon. The memories she clung to gave off a heat that repelled them.
