The animal-like terror had left me and now there was nothing left but hollow exhaustion. My feet stumbled forward on their own and I didn’t know or care where they led me.

I looked up dully when I realized my feet had stopped. The street I was walking along ended at the edge of murky, green water.

I knelt down on the edge of the Flood and scooped up handfuls of water with shaking hands, numbly scrubbing at my skin and hair to wash away the weeper gore. The water wasn’t clean, but it was better than whatever had been in that cart.
