For Runako Campbell, "The Outsiders' is a reminder to hold onto hope, embrace possibility and 'stay gold' in difficult times.
I just can’t get over how cool this girl is and how good her grasp is on the character that she plays. She wasn’t given a lot of source material on her character to begin with because there’s pretty much nothing on Ace anyway, but the way she approaches this character is with so much finesse and understanding. Also, she has a degree from Princeton in African-American history. That is really freaking cool! That just also means she knows a lot of the historical context that goes on both within the show and within her own characters head. It’s cool how she talks about implementing that historical context within her limited role as an ensemble character.
Highlighted both of these parts because she gets Ace so badly! I feel like I’ve always tried to write her in this way as well, but Ace is somebody who is craving connection even though she understands that she will never be one of the boys fully. It’s such an interesting dynamic and I’m glad that it is her playing Ace on Broadway right now because there’s truly nobody better to do it!
