Hiya! I remember you and Vinelle had made some hilarious renditions of Bella's terrible, horrible, no good art in Painting Red Madonnas, but I haven't been able to find them on either of your blogs, probably bc Tumblr's search function is the work of the devil. Any chance you could link me to them? (btw I'm trying to restrain myself from re-re-reading PRM as I want to get through my book tbr pile before the end of the year. So far I haven't been very successful. The siren song of the mole people is too strong)

@theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin had forgotten we did that, as frankly did I. I think it was a spur of the moment decision too, I remember at the time of writing we originally wanted Rosalie to be on her way, just... taking a while... and then several weeks had passed of this competent woman with immense wealth and superpowers failing to get from Monaco to Volterra, and our choices were "She got really caught up writing Strongly Worded Letters and time just sort of flew, you know how it is" or "... bear dimension".

We chose bear dimension.

Thank you for reminding us, I remember it was difficult to write because I was laughing so hard.

I smile whenever I read Aloo's name in Heretic Pride, because it means "plum" in Persian and it's fun to think of the Jedi giving such a cutesy name to a kid.

It means “potato” in Hindi and Urdu, which I did have in mind (since a lot of Naboo names are Sanskrit or Hindi). There’s a post about that here.

But yes, even though my headcanon is that Aloo means “diligent” in Nubae, I kinda like the real world food associations of the name, because it adds a fairy tale feel to the story that works pretty well for a character who is unknowingly the sister of a queen.

Hi. Do you know of any good ace dating apps that have more than a handful of people using it? Or ordinary dating apps where you can set your preference to asexual?

Tinder and OkCupid both have options to set your orientation to ace. I don’t think there’s an aspec dating app that has more than a few thousand users.

Hey, do you have any parenting book/blog/whatever recommendations that has good parenting advice that respects kids' rights and agency? A friend of mine is having a baby and she's looking for resources like that

check out http://www.takingchildrenseriously.com/. their whole thing is basically cultivating non-coercive dynamics between children and parents. there hasn’t been an update since 2006 but they blogged pretty regularly for a few years there. I occasionally think they’re a bit overly optimistic about how their ideas play out in context (or maybe just writing from an upper-middle-class reality where you can always dictate your own priorities in relation to the outside world), but apart from that, on the whole it’s the best “parenting approach” I’ve seen anyone write about over a long term.

👍 how did you get into Discworld?

In (I think?) 2010, I saw XKCD comic that mentioned the series in passing, so I googled it, and was vaguely interested. So I looked up Prattchett in my local library, picked up The Truth and Jingo, (somewhat at random because the premises looked interesting,) read them, liked them, but didn’t want to commit to a massive book series, so I didn’t really keep reading them. In 2015, I read Monstrous Regiment, and then decided, hey these books are good and I’ll read more of them, but still wasn’t interested in reading the whole series. I read some of the early ones that summer, and kept reading Discworld books on and off over the years, enjoying them in a casual way. 

I got really into Discworld late this January, when I saw a top-notch text post about Vetinari by @july-19th-clubthat got me extremely interested in the City Watch arc, and I guess I’m “in the Discworld fandom” now because I’ve read 17 Discworld novels since the fateful day and I talk about Discworld daily on @patricianandclerk‘s discord server, which I open every day like it’s the morning paper.

Like I said, this question is too hard! But I have a soft spot for the one man one vote joke. Every time I see it I’m like!!! That’s him! That’s the man!

🌟which Discworld novel do you think is funniest?

No clue, honestly. Making Money had me laughing out loud recently, but there are some DREADFUL dad jokes in Pyramids, which I just finished, that I am still thinking about fondly.
