POLO

Players: Minimum of 3

Type of game: Running

Instructions:

Stand in a row and pick one person to be on. She will be our queen, since in this game being on is a privilege.

This person the stands facing the group a good distance away, say 5m. Our favourite place to play this was on two opposing pavements.

The Queen picks a category and shouts it out to the rest of the group. Let’s use animals as an example.

The group then quietly decide an object within the catergory, picking one item each. Choose one person from the group to list them all out. For example, our three players choose Dog, Cat and Pig.

The player who is on shouts out one of the items— ‘Dog’. The person who chose dog must race the Queen, they must go back and forth four times, spelling out ‘P-O-L-O’ each time they reach one end.

The person who gets back to their place first is in on in the next round!

Variations:

In my school a variation to make things more difficult for the one that was on went as such.

After the players shouted out their objects, they then turned around and pretended to do something at home (usually polishing shoes, showering or washing windows).

The Queen would then come and knock on each player’s back like a door. Using her best manners she must greet them and ask if she had picked their item. Players might try to put her off by answering things like ‘Sorry, we don’t buy at the door’, but she must persevere and ask— for e.g. ‘Hello Miss Smith, I’ve come to ask about the Dog.’

If the Queen has chosen correctly then they must race. However, if the person who picked dog was not chosen they could choose when to run, it didn’t have to be when she knocked on their back. It can even be while the Queen is busy asking another person.

This means that the Queen was never quite ready— it’s a good change to make when one person has been on for a long time.
