Bumi Seeds, Seminyak - here we tried zefir for the first time ever, a Russian dessert that looks much like meringue but is actually soft like gelatin. Also, I tried kartoshka which literally means "potato" in the Russian language. It's basically a chocolate cookie-cake, quite tasty as a matter of fact. What I absolutely love about this café is the variety of international sweet dishes that are offered.

Birthday Trake for Mr Chekov/Walter Koenig! This is a traditional popular desert iwented in Russia, called "Potatoe", shaped into nukelar wessles, guns, wigs, starfleet insignia etc. Worf loved them as a child, called them "delicious.".

Have you heard of it? In plain English it means Bird’s Milk, a very traditional Russian delicacy, also common in Ukraine and Romania. The name originates from Greek, bird’s milk implying a delicacy very hard to obtain, a rare pleasure. My encounter with this dessert deserves further explanation.

Apple Sharlotka

As I have asked for recipes from around the world, today I am making one from Russia that was donated by my friend Elena.

This dessert is like a cross between a clafoutis and a basic sponge recipe and is made with apples.  As such, it can be enjoyed either cold as a cake or warm as a pudding.

I 4 used tart (not sweet) eating apples for this peeled, cored and chopped into 1cm dice. I mixed these with a little caster sugar. 

In I separate bowl I then beat the rest of the sugar and the eggs together until they were thickened and foamy and then carefully folded in a mixture of plain flour and baking powder. The I mixed in the apples and spooned the mixture into a parchment lined 23cm round cake pan and baked it for 55 minutes at 180°C.
