Service members of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service. 139 of them had been held captive since 2022.

The youngest freed Ukrainian defender is 23. He was captured at 19 while defending Mariupol and was illegally sentenced by a Russian court to life imprisonment. The oldest defender released today is 63.

Today’s exchange took place after a long pause, and we thank everyone working to make these exchanges possible. We must, and we will, bring everyone back.

The group includes soldiers from the Armed Forces, National Guard, and State Border Guard Service, many of whom were captured in 2022 during the defense of Mariupol, Azovstal, and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

“We will continue to fight for every person who still remains in captivity,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said. He credited the success of the swap to the “exchange fund” replenished by Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines and the support of international partners.

Among them are Mariupol defenders and civilians held by Russia for many years, even since 2014 when it started its war against Ukraine.

We are grateful to the UAE 🇦🇪 for helping make this exchange possible, to all Ukrainian institutions involved, and to our warriors for their courage in replenishing Ukraine’s “exchange fund”.

The released Ukrainian captives included members of the Navy, the Air Force, the Airborne Troops, the National Guard, the State Border Guard, the Territorial Defense Forces, and a police officer, according to the president.

“They are all from different sectors of the front, but they have one thing in common: They fought for Ukraine,” Zelensky said on Telegram.

Some POWs had been held captive for more than two years, according to Zelensky.

82 privates and sergeants. 21 officers. Defenders of the Kyiv and Donetsk regions, Mariupol and Azovstal, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions. Warriors of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine, border guards, and police officers.

I thank our exchange team for delivering such good news for Ukraine.

#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . Ukraine brought back 49 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians from Russian captivity on Sept. 13, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

These include personnel of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, the National Police, and border guards.

A total of 23 women were brought back, including civilians detained and illegally imprisoned by Russia before the full-scale invasion, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported.

Leniye Umerova, a Crimean Tatar, is among the released. She was detained by Russia at the Georgian-Russian border in 2022 when she traveled to occupied Crimea to look after her cancer-stricken father.

Military medic and Hero of Ukraine Viktor Ivchuk was also among those released. Ivchuk, a colonel of the Armed Forces and head of a military hospital in Mariupol, has been held captive by Russia since April 2022.

“We have to bring home all of our soldiers and civilians,” Zelensky said.

The released captives include 15 soldiers of the Azov Brigade who defended the city of Mariupol in 2022.

Thankfully, another 207 Ukrainian prisoners of war have been released from Russian captivity and are now back home in Ukraine. 🇺🇦🙏💙💛🙏🇺🇦

#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . President Volodymyr Zelensky said that 207 Ukrainian prisoners returned home from Russian captivity on Jan. 31.

It was one of the largest groups of Ukrainian prisoners to be brought back home since the beginning of the full-scale war.

Earlier in January, 230 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) were brought back home in the largest prisoner exchange to date since February 2022.

“We remember everyone in captivity,” Zelensky said.

“Soldiers and civilians. We have to return everyone.”
