While re-reading Vanitas no Carte I've noticed that Moreau talked about some medicines that he would give to cursed vampires

Could it be... the same medicine that Ruthven gives to Jeanne? Since it's (I think) confirmed that Ruthven is the one protecting Moreau and approving his experiments, he probably takes the medicines from him

trick or treat ! thinking about starting to re-read Make Yourself Useful to celebrate this special day

"I'm telling you, there's no romance to it anymore," says the woman at the bar on Halloween.

She is tall and handsome, beneath the goofy vampire cape and plastic fangs. Dark eyes, glossy black curls, a strong hooked nose. You had been taken by her magnetic presence as soon as you saw her; too shy to do anything else, you merely took a stool nearby, and listened.

She had been drinking heavily all night, speaking to a man who, eh, was probably hot if you were into that. He also wore a shitty Spirit Halloween vampire cape.

"I thought you didn't care about romance," he says.

"Not of that sort! I was speaking of capital-R Romance. Where has it gone? Where is the internal torment, the lashing and crying? They used to put up at least a perfunctory fight. Now, they don't even pretend to be frightened." She slumps against her hand.

"There is nothing wrong with a consensual contract," the man says. "I, personally, have never had any issues with women being uninterested."

"Oh, fuck you. That's not even what I was talking about."

"Perhaps it is just your bias, showing through. Certainly you can find someone who doesn't want to be — well, you know."

"You!" The woman whirls around, quite suddenly, and points at you. "Answer a question for me, will you?"

You nod, quite taken aback.

"Say I give you whatever parts you like," says the vampire, skipping right past asking if you were trans, "and in exchange I hypnotize you into becoming my obedient dyke slave for the rest of your life. Is that a good deal?"

You straighten up in your seat. Now's my chance, you think. I need to be the one to put up a front, so that she can tear it down. I need to give her exactly what she wants; just do a real good bodice-ripper impression, and win the jackpot. C'mon, c'mon. Say you would hate it. You would never let yourself be used like that.

But staring into the woman's dark eyes, already falling deep, the truth slips from your lips. "There's no downside."

"See!" The woman slaps the bar. "I told you."

The man nods stiffly. "Well, perhaps we should try a couple more."

"I'll do a hundred girls a night, the results will all be the same!" She was standing up. She was leaving.

Desperately, you say, "H-hey, but like, is it still on the table?"

"Shut up," she says, her back to you.

You were unable to speak for the rest of the night.

You get: to re-read Make Yourself Useful (but not get turned into a vampire's thrall 😔)

The Case Study of Vanitas Volume 3 Review

I call this “NoeVani, the volume”. Oooh boy. If you ship these two together, then this is the volume for you. They get so many moments together that it’s hard NOT to ship them. Still, if you ship Vanijeanne, you’re valid. If you ship NoeDomi, you’re valid. If you ship DomiJeanne, you’re valid. Heck, if you ship RolVani, you are also valid.

Anyways, this volume covers episodes 6-8 of the anime. It’s almost verbatim, but I think they cut out the part where the catacombs were revealed to be a tourist attraction part. I don’t remember if that was in the anime or not—please let me know. Basically, this volume changes the trajectory of Noe and Vanitas’s relationship. At first, both were only using each other for their own needs, yet as they spend time together, Noe develops a desire to want to know more about Vanitas. He’s been very self-centered and it was only when Vanitas was about to get attacked by Ruthven that Noe realizes that he knew nothing about Vanitas. He’s slowly seeing Vanitas as his own person in a way. The fact that the entire story is technically Noe’s memoir about Vanitas also supports this.

There are also a few VaniJeanne moments in this volume. It is a divisive ship in the fanbase given how Vanitas behaved in the first volume. All I can say is that I don’t mind it and that Vanitas is probably dead at the end of the story, so the ship was doomed to begin with—heck, Noe might even be thinking Vanitas was in love with Jeanne but it might not actually be the case. Noe could be an unreliable narrator for all we know. Which is why I try not to get too engrossed in shipping discourse and just ship what I want. I mainly ship NoeVani and DomiJeanne, but I don’t mind the other pairs either.

But yeah, I never trusted Ruthven and never will. He’s very suspicious. If he knows that the Vampire Queen is a Curse Bearer, why is he trying to silence Vanitas? Will something bad happen if the Vampire Queen gets cured?

The volume ends with the new arc of the duo going into the catacombs to search for a case of missing vampires. This was honestly my favorite part when watching the anime, so I’m excited to see if anything got changed or removed in the anime adaptation. To be honest, I have a bit of a soft spot for Roland in the sense that I like him for humorous purposes. Why I say that is because I once read a Korean post on Twitter that called Roland a fluorescent cabbage and now I cannot get it out of my mind. He’s certainly a fluorescent cabbage for sure.

Also, there is one thing that has been bothering me for a bit. How did Roland know that Noe was a vampire? Wouldn’t he try to check if both were vampires? Was it just a guess to throw Vanitas into a cell and see how he’d react?

I also love the Pandora Hearts easter egg as Vanitas used Vincent and Gilbert for his and Noe’s aliases. It also befits them as Vincent is the younger brother and Vanitas is the younger of the two. I need more Pandora Hearts easter eggs, please! 

One last thing before I end this volume—this is the first time Mochizuki has drawn two people on a cover in a serialized manga. Pandora Hearts usually has one character on the cover. I thought the same would be the case for The Case Study of Vanitas as the first two volumes had the two leads, but this volume breaks old trends by having both Vanitas and Noe in the cover and it’s so gorgeous! Let me know your thoughts on this volume!
