I’m curious as to what people think Oscar’s semblance might be.

Honestly I feel like Oscar’s semblance might be an important part of his struggle with his identity and him having a different semblance than Ozpin or the other ozcarnations may make him realise, that he’s he may still fundamentally change but the merge isn’t parasitic in nature. He is still fundamentally Oscar but with all of the memories and knowledge and magical powers of the previous Oz’s.

But his semblance shows at the end of the day he is still also Oscar too.

I’m thinking either a dream or memory related semblance, maybe something like clairvoyance etc… it would link back to volume 4 when we first saw him wake up after the cutscene after the villains made their plans as if it was something Oscar dreamt.

Oscar’s allusion is that of The Little Prince and whilst the character has no supernatural abilities he does possess the ability to see with his heart either metaphorical or literal depending on the adaptation which might allude to a telepathic semblance.

Either way I find it really interesting that Oscar’s semblance seems to be something stirring in the background. It was mentioned in volume 7 and Neon mentioned how they’re all going to be jealous as to what it is as a passing comment. And then also mentioned in volume 4 as well when Oscar first began training.

Either way I can’t wait to see what other people think Oscar’s semblance might be.

Au idea jaune's semblance is using his family's powers so he has is seven sisters parents in laws neices and nephews semblance plus any one who marries himself semblance so he has dozens of semblance making him a one man army

That would be an extremely powerful Semblance! And it would indeed make Jaune a one-man army. But what happens if someone in his family dies? Would the Semblance also disappear?

Random musing regarding your Ruby echoing Salem by surviving being killed by reforming herself from petal but….

OK, so if I recall, the creators have said Semblances should not allow for shape changing and while Ruby does reform as herself, isn't it kind of odd that she can break herself down and reform like that? Suddenly wondering if her ability to do so is rooted in having silver eyes.

Anyway, an idea I've often toyed with is Ruby being able to disintegrate other things and not just herself or whoever she is holding. Grab an enemy weapon (Among other things) & it is now petals! Now the item might reform if not kept that way, or maybe its just gone.

Anyway, this has me imagining, if Tyrian did try and kill her, rather than instantly offing him, she reforms and he tries killing her again, possibly even invited to.

So he tries again and again and again, he's just standing there slashing, arms, throat, head, through the heart, each time she reforms before he can even get the next swing in until she grabs his arms and is just like, "You're done" and he just starts fucking disintegrating.

This may be inspired by that comic idea I commissioned for how to take down the brothers but still, a thought.

So regarding Ruby’s semblance, I definitely think that she is specifically breaking that subtle ‘no shapeshifting’ rule thanks to her semblance having been influenced/empowered by old world magic or the general powers of the gods/Ever After. Either due to her Silver Eyes or just maybe having a dad-mom who has shapeshifting magic. Possibly both.

But to your actual point, yeah I definitely think we’re probably going to see Ruby explore the concept of using her semblance to just full-on disintegrate objects or even people. I mean, she just so happens to currently be in the academy that holds the Relic of Destruction. That doesn’t feel like a coincidence. I also think there’s a particularly interesting irony to the idea of Ruby, someone who is driven to help others and preserve life, ALSO holding the power to absolutely snuff out lives with a mere thought.

Though regarding your Tyrian idea, while I do certainly expect we’ll get a sequence where a character ‘kills’ Ruby over and over only for Ruby to reform each and every time, I don’t think TYRIAN is the villain who’s going to do it.

I think it’s going to be SALEM.

I mean you already brought up all the similarities between Ruby and Salem, so how perfect would it be highlight all those parallels by having Salem absolutely obliterate Ruby over and over with a barrage of magic, only for Ruby to reform no worse for wear, JUST LIKE SALEM herself always does. Heck, maybe to illustrate the point further, Ruby uses her semblance to disintegrate Salem, even though she knows that Salem will just reform herself.

Basically, Ruby pulls a full-blown ‘I can’t kill you and you can’t kill me’ and Salem has to deal with the ultimate uno-reverse. Not to mention this would be the PERFECT time to throw Salem’s classic ‘There will be no victory in strength’ right back in her face.

Happy RWBY headcanon time:

Taiyang, Summer and Qrow were a little worried about how Ruby’s semblance would manifest because the Rose semblance manifests differently each generation and has the potential to be destructive.

(I HC Summer’s semblance allows her to turn herself into petals to absorb an impact but it evolves into her being able to turn other things into petals via impact, as learned when she slammed her fists onto the desk she and Qrow were revising on when Tai and Raven were being intentionally distracting and turned it into a pile of petals. It took a while to learn how to bring objects back and she was terrified of hurting someone (I have a whole thing for this tbf)).

They were worried about that more than whatever Yang might have because Yang’s semblance could be anything and whatever it was they’d manage it, whereas with Ruby they had a specific thing to worry about.

So when they took Yang for a haircut when she was 4 and she set the hairdressers on fire it caught everyone a little off guard.

RWBY Worldbuilding Idea: Semblance: Taiyang, Ilia

Don’t know if Ilia has a canon semblance, but Taiyang definitely doesn’t so We though of some. Literally in the last five minutes so sorry if they have holes to them.

Taiyang: Empathetic Impact. When someone strikes him, Taiyang can cause the impact to mirror on the attacker in one of two ways. One, the literal measured force he received, useful against weaker opponents and glass cannons. Two, they receive damage relative to what he FELT from the impact, useful against stronger enemies and tanks.

His semblance is most effective against entities with the same body structure as him, and gets weaker the further the divergence of the target is. It basically goes, from most effective to least, humans, humanoid Grimm like beringels (the ape ones), four limbed grimm where the limb structures differ such as beowolves and ursa, then grimm more divergent than that such as feilong and taijus.

After years of training and experience with it, Taiyang has figured out two additional factors of his semblance. One, it now works with ranged attacks, weakening over distance. Two, he’s figured out how to cause his own strikes on someone to mirror on another who already struck him

Ilia: Chromatic Array. Ilia can make any dust type perform the effects of any dust type, including no effect. It’s the kind of ability that’s simple but gets better and better the more different ways you use it. She can have any kind of effect in her own weapon, wreak confusion havoc and even malfunction against her enemies, or even prevent their weapons from firing altogether in some situations. She also only ever needs one dust type on her person or in her weapon. She can also supercharge dust, but only in its “true” effect and it takes too long for anything other than premeditated acts, unlike the instantaneous other effects of her semblance.

Explaining the RWBY Magic System

Tonight we're comparing RWBY system of "magic" to other shows to help explain that no, RWBY does not have a convoluted system of magic. We'll be splitting it into 3 sections. 1. Aura/semblance 2. Dust 3. Magic in the show

Now then, let's start with the most well-known and old shounen. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. In that franchise, Ki, a life energy, like Aura, is NOT magic. And the techniques that come from using Ki, like Semblances, are not magic. But Magic does exist in the show. And it is shown to have its own strengths and weaknesses.

Dust....not magical, not life energy. Its the unobtanium that is an energy source and does more than that. How many shows, anime or cartoon or otherwise, are shown to have some sort of fictional element that does more than just serve as an energy source?

So what makes RWBY "convoluted?"

Weiss: There's no such thing as magic.

Goku from Dragon Ball uses Ki, but its not magic, he uses supernatural martial arts and can fly...but again, that's not magic.

And he and the Z fighters get surprised by actual magic.

So what makes Weiss being surprised something for critics to get upset about?

Then we have the magic itself.

Like Dragon Ball , magic is not superior nor inferior to martial arts or semblances. It varies on wielders and on its use.

Therefore, when people say that RWBY's Magic system is "Too convoluted" or "too complicated"....they do so while completely ignoring every other show out there. Because to "Criticize" RWBY, you pretty much have to ignore everything in every other show or claim it doesn't matter in order to have a point.

One of my biggest disappointments in V8 was the lack of extra color in Ruby's semblance when she carried 4 people with her. It changed before, when she carried Weiss and Nora and I was so excited to see her carry more people and watch all the pretty colors swirl in a vortex!

It didn't happen.

And I was like "Do I have to do everything in this FNDM?". The answer is "Yes. Yes, I do". Therefore, behold!

I think, it's obvious who's Ruby's passenger(s) in each case :)

Also, it would be cool if Ruby's passenger(s) could use their semblance when she carries them, thus giving their tornado-train an extra effect. Nora as a passenger would strike lightnings (and probably strike themselves as one if they come in contact with smth/sb, bc Ruby would gain Nora's durability in this state). Yang would make them a fire tornado+durability. Ren would make them unnoticeable to Grimm. Jaune would give them extra speed (also volume capacity and endurance to carry more people for a longer distance, I think?) Blake's semblance would allow to create distraction-clones. Not sure how much use would Weiss's semblance be, but she probably could use her gliffs to apply dust damage for their tornado, for example with fire dust it would work as if she's with Yang, but without the durability.

🩷I don't really think I see anybody talk about this but I don't think when I was reincarnates the person he reincarnates into can use whatever assemblance he had if he had one or wasn't passing his magic off is his siblings so I'm thinking us maybe develops

🟡certain types of semblances he needs for certain occasions I'm thinking maybe he had a semblance a bit similar or possibly like rinse where it hides like his presence from Grimm and maybe

🌸 that's about it or maybe he had a semblance that helped him charm people and sway them to his side but when it comes to people like ironwood who assemblance is metal it can like override that ability

🔴 of he is to charm people and doesn't fully work like us once but it can still have a kind of effect on people that they are still charmed and think about him

🟢Another idea I have for his semblance I don't think it's really time related Oz has more of a Time aesthetic to his character but I don't think he has any time related abilities cuz if he did like even if he

🌕 could like turn back the clock or like turn back Time even for like a minute because I've seen it in shows where they don't really want to dip into time travel and I know Ruby doesn't want to do that but I've seen it in some shows where they don't really

🩷 fully want to dip in a time travel so they'll just have it where a character sacrifices themselves for their ability lets them stop time for one minute to change a few things or they can change time back

🔵 for one minute or maybe a few minutes and I think if I have had a semblance like that he would have used it over and over again and example I can think about is miraculous ladybug if you've never

⚫ seen the show it's a show where the people in the show get magic jewelry and it lets them transform and use certain abilities and one of the abilities in this show is called second chance and

💛 it's where you take the magic bracelet and you activated and it let you go back in time 5 minutes each time before you transform back into a normal

🔴 civilian and I think if all has had something like that he would have stopped the fall of beacon so I know a lot of people think he's possibly has a Time related semblance but he just has the time aesthetic to his character and that's it

🟠Cuz like I said if he could manipulate time he would have went back in time even if it was a minute to give himself a edge against cinder or at least to stop send her from killing Amber or from even letting himself die

⚫Cuz I was sitting here also wondering what was lionheart's semblance, for us could have had a semblance where Maybe he was kind of like talk

🌺who fought Maria where he could be invincible for a certain amount of minutes and he combined that invincibility along with his eyes like Powers he currently still has left that are connected to the cane and that we see Oscar develop and use in volume eight
