My family (all of whom watch RWBY) came up with this (upsetting) theory over dinner tonight. The steps in logic follow thusly:

1) Ren is the only one who has Aura and energy left. 2) Jaune is out of Aura and therefore can’t use his Semblance to amplify anyone’s Aura. 3) In the premier it was shown that Ren can stretch his Semblance, masking emotions, over a distance. 4) A giant horde of Grimm is coming to Argus, and their biggest defenders are down. 5) Ren can mask emotions. 6) Ren masks Argus’s emotions. 7) Ren cannot use his Semblance without Aura drain and severe fatigue. 8) Severe. Fatigue. 9) Ren saves Argus.

10) Ren fucking dies.

At this rate, I feel like Qrow's gonna end up killing not one, but two Roses. At least, Ruby in the metaphorical, figurative sense. And he won't go as far as to actually ignite the scene in which she finally crumbles, depending on how Rooster Teeth depicts it, but he will definitely contribute to it.

Like he is already.

I just hope it's as frustrating as I imagine because here we have this man who practically swore to protect this girl with his life but in the end, he ends up contributing to her destruction, like he did with her mother. While the first he couldn't control, the second's because of dependency habits he actually can control. It's frustrating because it's just so counterintuitive.

And, like...Qrow's a smart character, so, like,,,,tf

Crazy-ass Theory (TM) time

So Jinn is the spirit of the Relic of Knowledge. It seems likely that all the other Relics have “spirits” as well, since her role was created by the God of Light along with the other Relics.

If only the God of Light created her, then I think it may be sufficient to say that he also created the Relic of Creation, whereas the God of Darkness created the Relics of Destruction and Choice. This may be why Salem went after the Relic of Choice first out of all of them -- it is a “Dark” Relic, along with the added bonus of it being under Ozpin’s academy.

Well...

The “lonely” tower shown in this episode sort of looks like Beacon. As we know, all the schools have a Relic under them. Well, what if that wasn’t always the case? What if they were all kept in these “fortresses,” like the tower in the flashback, only able to be released by a God or a Maiden?

Basically, here’s MY theory:

Ozpin stole the Relic of Choice from the tower and brought it back to Beacon.

Salem wants it back, because she is the guardian spirit of the Relic of Choice.

Is it weird that, though I disagree with the Brothers Grimm/Bumblebee thing, that I do see certain parallels between the Gods and one of Yang's relationships? This mostly came to my mind because I thought the BoD might appreciate Ruby's "let's kill it" mentality, but then I compared the relationship between both pairs of siblings, and thoughts started to brew...

Hmm…

No, I’m not really feeling it.

Ruby and Yang do not have a negative relationship. There is no love between the two brothers, only sparse sympathy and compromise. It seems that the brothers disagree with each other as their natural state of being, and only refrain from their inclinations when the other pleads otherwise. When the God of Darkness gathered the magic in his claw, his brother looked away – he did not cry out in objection at the destruction of his creations, but certainly didn’t stop him, either. The God of Darkness did not confirm with his brother that destroying their creations was acceptable.

Ruby and Yang DO try to agree. They DO love each other, and would do anything for each other. Ruby is different from Yang in many ways, but those are not differences that resolutely separate them into constant narrow avoidances of conflict. I would argue as well that Ruby’s “let’s kill it” mindset is not out of morbidity or a lust for destruction… it’s ‘cause they’re Grimm. And she’s a huntress. And that’s what they do.

Ohhhhh my god.

Oh my GOD.

So, in RWBY Chibi it was shown that Ruby’s birthday was October 31st, and since CRWBY confirmed that’s her birthday, they also therefore confirmed that Remnant uses our calendar.

The Beacon school year loosely follows the Japanese/non-American school year (cause, y’know, anime), and seeing as the first semester started in what looked like spring and it only started snowing after the Vytal Festival was finished, we can conclude that the Vytal Festival, taking place at the end of a school term, began at about August/September-ish. Ruby also confirms with Winter that “it is fall now,” but in a voice that implies that it really hasn’t been fall for all that long, and seeing as she said that on the first or second day of the tournament, it leads me to believe that she considers “fall” to begin at the very beginning of the fall term, and that the tournament takes up the first few weeks of the fall term (being technically an academic event). In Japan, the fall term begins in early September.

Leading me to believe that, from the seasonal alignment, and the canonic use of the Gregorian calendar...

The White Fang destroyed Beacon Tower on 9/11.

So, here’s my theory on how Raven got these powers:

Qrow clearly didn’t know she was Spring, and they said in Welcome to Haven that the previous Spring had abandoned her training. Now, I know it’s very convenient Raven found a girl named “Vernal,” but that could... literally be her color name. Why, though?

Well, let’s say Spring ran away, and was taken in by Raven’s tribe. Raven mentors her, and, much like Vernal, becomes a mother figure. However, Spring dies somehow, and the last in her thoughts was her “mother,” Raven.

Then Vernal enters the picture, running away to join the tribe, and instead of killing her, Raven takes her in as her new apprentice, to fill that daughter role she just lost again, and, as a symbolic acceptance into the tribe, renames her “Vernal,” in honor of her fallen comrade.

Alternatively, Raven could have just killed her on a raid, and received her powers. Whatever floats you boat.

Okay.

I’m about to say something... literally crack worthy.

And it’s going to make SENSE.

Raven says to Yang that she can prove she knows magic is real by showing her that he did something to her and Qrow, and then proceeds to show her that she can turn into a raven. So, this implies HEAVILY that a) Ozpin possesses magical powers, and b) he gave them that transfiguration ability.

This basically offhandedly confirms that the Wizard from the Maidens tale was Ozpin. (Like we didn’t already know, but hush.)

But that’s not the point of this post.

Because when Raven is describing Ozpin’s weird fixation with her and her brother, she says she soon realized that he was actually just very interested in her whole team, not just RQ. So, why would Ozpin just give the twins that power, when he could give it to the whole team, who she made clear he was just as interested in as RQ?

Well, the first part of my theory is as follows: Summer didn’t disappear... she transformed. And she never could return. Either that, or she returned, but hasn’t transformed as a way to protect her children, without putting them in the danger of knowing where she is (because, something something, Ozpin, something something Salem, something something Silver Eyes, something something).

But... Summer must have transformed into something biological, right? I mean, the twins got to be birds, which are very good in a fight, but... wouldn’t it be dumb to have her turn into, like, a rock or a rose or something?

So what’s a creature we know, that is a protector of sorts? That keeps its children safe, and has mental faculties as a clear indicator of advanced intelligence? That is shown EXPRESSLY in relation to Team STRQ in Volume Four?
