An unexplained hiatus + new snippet (Gasp! A post?)

Alright, so, hello there. Apologies for the unexplained hiatus for the last while. I just haven’t been feeling super inspired to write or make any attempt to until just recently (literally a couple hours ago). I think I just needed a break to focus on some other areas of my life that have been neglected but I’m feeling a little more refreshed and am slowly tackling the next chapter of Cry Havoc! and Let Slip the Dogs of War (Canis Major series) starring my turian/human couple Ryan Hunter and Atticus Regirian the military varren handlers. I’m still not 100% convinced that long, multi-chapter fics as part of a series are my jam for writing fic, but I made super progress tonight, so I thought I’d venture out of my black-hole I had disappeared into and post a snippet. Hopefully I can keep the writing train chugging along and have a new chapter out before too long (but I make no promises!).

The following morning dawned warm and cloudless, and the rising song of the cicada’s foretold of a sweltering day in the Brazilian jungle. Ryan mopped away the perspiration already gathering at her hairline, the strands of honeyed hair beginning to plaster to her neck as she stood in full armor, watching the faint breeze create eddies in the mist that rose off of the piles of twisted rebar, charred concrete and warped steel before quickly it was evaporated by the sun. Today marked the first of the three phases of competition. Phase one involved searching the numerous rubble piles scattered around the Vila’s bombing range, where teams were responsible for locating explosives and buried “survivors”, volunteers who agreed to be sandwiched in between pieces of debris. The second phase of competition consisted of a seven-kilometer trek into the jungle, following a day old scent trail that was currently being laid out by another volunteer while competitors gathered to watch teams tackle the rubble pile. The third portion of the competition would be a war game against the current class of N4 soldiers stationed in Rio, with squads of varren-handler teams decided by random draw.

The competitors had been at it for hours already, and the early morning sun was already beginning to take it’s toll on the varren that was working the pile, her tongue lolling as she daintily traversed a narrow steel girder.

She wiped her brow again. “I’m going to be just a puddle of sweat inside my armor by the end of the day.” Ryan muttered to Sirius and Argos, laying at her feet. Random draw had them competing seventeenth and thirtieth in the order of go, in the worst of the heat, unlike some of the earlier competitors who had an advantage of starting before the first rays of light crept over the land. She knelt, dishing out fresh water to each of her boys trying to keep them as cool as possible until they were ready to search. Argos stood and stretched, muscles rippling under his black hide as he playfully grabbed at the toy Ryan had strapped to her thigh. It was a tugging rope made of recycled ship fuel lines fastened into a specially made holster for easy access when she wanted to reward the varren.

“Not yet you cheater.” She half-heartedly chastised the eager black varren, smiling when he huffed dramatically, turning the intensity of his puppy dog eyes to full scale ten. “You’ve got work to do before you can have that.” Eyeballing the digital timeclock posted at the edge of the designated search zone, Ryan saw that the varren who had been on course with her turian handler had ran out of time to complete their search, which meant her first attempt to tackle the pile wasn’t far away. Dumping the last licks of water from the dish onto the ground, Ryan gave her varren the command of “with me” and the trio made their way over to the start line.

As they moved into the fringes of the crowd, Argos panted. The crush and hum of the group was making his brother more wary and on edge than usual, and he pressed closer to his brindled sibling, providing comfort through proximity. The scent of stress and anticipation rose all around, with a pervading addition of excitement and Argos couldn’t help the full bodied tremble that shook his muscles, rattled his bones, and made his heart thump a little faster. Something was going to happen soon, and he wanted to be a part of it.

Also, in exciting real life news, I’m in the progress of getting a baby pupper too! She’s (I’m on the breeders list for one of the 3 girls pictured below - there were 9 puppies in the litter, 3 girls and 6 boys) 12 days old at the moment. Not sure which one will be mine until they’re a bit older, but I look forward to each update I get as they grow!

Over the past few years, IHM has had the pleasure of premiering music from some incredibly gifted musicians. One such project we’ll always be proud of having done so for is 1st Vows, helmed by East Coast musician Ryan Hunter. It’s been more than a year since Ryan has blessed us with any new music, so it’s a joyous occasion that he’s now resurfaced with Body Talk, a song which he wrote with Imad Royal and Dave Lubben. 1st Vows’ creamy falsettos quiver under the heavy weight of emotion over a penumbral bed of tender warbling synths and gently puckering staccato plucks. Body Talk tugs hard on the heart strings, like a bittersweet melting blend of Jaymes Young and Mikky Ekko. 1st Vows has done it again, and hopefully it won’t be another year before he treats us to such sublime sonic bliss.
