Dark Savior (Sega Saturn-EU)
When compact discs first began to appear in retail stores the longbox packaging served a transitional purpose. Longboxes were a tall, cardboard package used for CDs in the late 1980s and early 1990s to allow them to be displayed in record store bins alongside vinyl albums. They were 12” (30 cm) tall (the same length as the standard 33⅓ LP), and capable of containing multiple discs when necessary. The extra space allowed for more elaborate artwork than the standard small jewel cases. Most longboxes were full color, with details about the compact disc on the back and art that was reworked for the new shape and size.
New Dan Clowes, new paperback edition of D. Wolk’s All of the Marvels, a recent Gilbert Fritz adaptation, and two Conundrum 25 books rounds out some upcoming fall reading.
Organized some comics, played some Pac-Man, listened to the audio commentary on Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, mixed a pair of solid Manhattans… relaxing day.
Missing the Shmoo so much. After being away for five days, strikes me how everything in the house reminds me of her.
Various Artists, Singles (OST) (1992). CD Longbox.
Taped-together panels taken from the CD longbox packaging of two albums: History Never Repeats (The Best Of Split Enz) by Split Enz (front of longbox) and from Crowded House by Crowded House (back of longbox).
Freshman year of high school and wanting to decorate the inside of my locker, I somehow figured out that CD longboxes were the perfect width to fit inside the door. So I cut up the two for these Crowded House and Split Enz albums, among my earliest compact disc purchases. I actually think these were part of a triptych, with the front of the Crowded House album as the top panel, as evidenced by the paper residue attached to the bit of tape at the top of the Split Enz panel.
