Charming

I don’t really remember a lot about going to sleep last night. I remember falling asleep on Arels chest while watching old sitcom reruns. I remember getting mad at him for letting me fall asleep a few days ago because once I did, I would have to wake up, clean the kitchen, leave him, and go to bed. (when you’re in a sleepy/cozy state this is never fun)

But last night I fell asleep again and he carried me to my room and tucked me in. I remember him laying the stuffed animal I have had my entire life next to my pillow, whispering “Watch after her buddy.”  

With a kiss on the forehead he was gone. 

I woke up and the kitchen was clean, there was nothing for me to worry about, it even snowed.

Eviction ( a short story for VicStory)

I'm sitting at home. My home. Talking to my favorite doll, Clair. I do this on most days when there isn’t any school.

Mommy is upstairs lying down. She has been acting so worried lately, but that’s ok, it will blow over. Maybe she’s sick.

A knock hits the door. So powerful it's almost as if someone is wanting to knock down our door.

Maybe it's my best friend--she lives across the street so maybe she wants to play outside, or bring her doll into the kitchen to have tea with me…?

But this knock is too loud.

  It's thunderous.

  It's angry.

  Mommy runs down the stairs before i can get to the door to answer it.

“Go to your room!”

Why does she sound angry? I haven't done anything!

“Go!”

She is shouting. Mommy never shouts at me. I obey and run upstairs just as the door opens.

    Peeking through my door, I see a man in a uniform. Mommy is crying. She is shouting at him...pleading. He stands like a statue...unmoving...until...he grabs her wrist. My eyes begin to sting...my own tears wet my cheeks. Leave her alone!

Everything is a blur.

The man with the uniform comes up the stairs and pushes open my door. I fall backward. He is a blur. My arm is squeezed in his large hand. I drop Clair and watch her fade from my sight as I am carried down the stairs. I'm crying,

"Please, let me have my dolly..." Nothing changes. He doesn't hear. He doesn't care and i can't see.

I look at the walls...my walls...is it for the last time? The yellow kitchen where Mommy and I made cookies and Mommy helped me learn my letters. The living room where Mommy and I read books and snuggled together on the sofa on cold nights. The front door where Mommy always entered with a smile, even though I could tell how tired she was, and a "How's my beautiful girl?"

  I look at my home which is no longer my home. My arm hurts from the man's stern grip.

  Now…I am standing outside of a house. The man said it's not my home anymore. It's cold. It's dark. With no where to go I stand before a locked door and a house I may no longer find comfort in.

  In that moment, even my mother, the one who always knew what to do looked like a child, just as lost as I am...
