Who's the better one-off character? (Round 5)
Clyde Bruckman (played by Peter Boyle in "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose")
Maurice & Lyda (played by Ed Asner & Lily Tomlin in "How the Ghosts…")
Clyde Bruckman: Hilarious. Tragic. Makes fun of Mulder, won an Emmy for it. "Final Repose" is one of TXF's most acclaimed episodes for good reason. If Clyde wasn't Clyde, this episode wouldn't be nearly as well received.
Clyde Bruckman: You don't get it, do you, kid? Two years from now, while driving down Route 91, coming home to your wife and baby daughter, you're going to be hit head-on by a drunk, driving a blue '87 Mustang. You'll end up looking worse than 60 feet of bad road your body slides across after flying out your front windshield. Young Husband: Mister, you really need to work on your closing technique.
Maurice & Lyda: I appreciate their attempts at pop psychology and gaslighting
Blah blah blah, I see you’ve been thinking about the kiss. Have you considered thinking about it harder?
Series 6 Episode 6 - The Kiss
First, the full clip, for context:
And now, we scrutinise.
(Some parts have been slowed down for a more detailed analysis.)
He said, with no emotion, fidgeting with his hand nervously. Also not enough people are speaking about the moan. He moans! Greg is already excited, though playfully, because he knows what's about to happen.
Greg says his line straight to camera, taunting Alex. Alex is visibly nervous, still fidgeting.
They begin to turn to each other, Greg is already grinning, Alex is far more sincere.
They lean in. Alex has to lean a bit further out of his chair to reach Greg. Alex’s hand is still on his chair. Alex’s other hand and Greg’s hands both go down with their knees. (So in sync). They’re already tilting their head, Alex to the left and Greg to the right.
Some hesitation, or rather, Alex leans forward, lips parted, but Greg backs up a bit.
Alex leans in again, giggling anxiously. Greg doesn’t move, also grinning, but more so at Alex. They’re so close, but they manage to not touch yet. It’s as though they have been struck by the reality of what they’re about to do.
Greg goes in for the kiss and now Alex can follow. Greg closes his eyes first and puckers up a bit more than Alex.
Alex completes the kiss with a final peck and backs off with a slight grimace. Greg smiles and doesn’t move quite yet.
Alex nods satisfactorily to camera and Greg pulls away. They adjust their legs and settle back into their seats.
Questions: Is Alex a) in shock, or b) full of regret? And what is Greg writing on his cards? (I have a conspiracy theory that at least half of the time he is scribbling nonsense, and I demand that he show us the cards.)
Greg cringes a bit. Just for camera? I’m not convinced he’s that upset about it.
Later, Greg touches his lips. In fairness he always has his pen in his mouth, so this could very well be insignificant.
And that’s The Kiss!
In conclusion: Greg takes the lead in the kiss and is an absolute tease. We also know that Greg writes these post-ad break bits. Which makes sense considering how excited he is, but it also leaves me dumbfounded. I don't even know what to say about that.
Bonus:
Alice Levine and Asim Chaudhry absolutely unsurprised and supportive. They get it.
I feel like I’m holding my breath until they kiss again, but it seems unlikely. But for now they won’t shut up about their fanfic, so that’s pretty satiating in the meantime.
THEY BROKE UP?!?!!? AND OFFICER WEST IS BACK (DAD)!!!
