A Razor-Sharp Smile
Reptilian eyes scan the cave, sweeping lazily over piles of gold and jewels, pupils dilating ever-so-slightly once they find the source of the noise. The dragon’s face splits into rows of dagger-sharp teeth as it looks down at the sacrifice the village prepared. The human below them trembles, wrists and ankles bound with coarse, golden rope, and their hair adorned with tiny gemstones. Surely they would be more appealing this way, or so the village thought.
The creature drags its great tail along the floor, bringing the frightened human close. Its scales are warm, and if they didn’t believe they were about to die, the human might have relaxed against them.
“Why do you tremble?” the dragon asks.
“You’re going to eat me, I feel as though my body is reacting accordingly.”
A rumble of thunder echoes throughout the cavern. But how? Storms could not happen inside. The human looks up tearfully. The great wyvern is laughing. It is not thunder at all.
“Why would I stain my teeth with your blood?” it asks, “you would not make a very hearty meal. You are much softer than a gem, and not nearly as crystalline. No, I think companionship would suit you best.”
“C-companionship?” the human asks.
“I don’t expect you to return to the people that left you to die,” the dragon went on, “stay with me in my home. I can keep you warm and sheltered. There is plenty of food to be found in the forest outside. You will be safe here. You will be loved here.”
The dragon raises its iron claw, and slices through the human’s bindings in a swift motion. The human cowers at first, notices their freedom, then looks up at the great beast in wonder. It is in wonder they stay, as their new life begins.
