The little ones don't understand.

Lyrae sensed something was wrong. It felt wrong in the cabin. Waking from her sleep and making soft distressed noises. And Leonis felt how uneasy his other was and whines softly, clinging to her. Despite his attempts to comfort her, Lyrae was already getting worked up. She didn't like this. It all felt wrong. She whimpers and her bottom lip trembles, tears already forming and threatening to spill.

Dada... want dada...

Elara opened her optics tiredly, the sound of her children's distress pulling her back to the waking world. She was so tired and... empty. She reaches out and pulls Lyrae and Leonis close. Lyrae starts crying because she wants her dada. He made everything better. Where was dada? Elara felt the tears falling down her own cheeks again. Leonis starts crying too. He didn't like any of this. Lyrae was crying and mama was crying and dada wasn't coming to hold them when they were upset.

Shhhhh it is okay.

Elara just holds them until Lyrae and Leonis cry themselves back to sleep. This made the pain in her heart hurt more. The pain and confusion on her babies' faces as they didn't understand why Grim wasn't here. Why he wasn't comforting them. How can she explain to them Grim wasn't coming back?
