i know i am late to the obsession train. but let me get this out.
bear isn’t just a coward and pathetic loser as everyone says he is. those words feel to me, so humanising of who he really is. he’s as much of a predator as the man who drugs a woman then assaults her, as much of a predator as a man who tortures his SA victims.
i don’t know if people want to have this conversation, but this man raped nikki. he assaulted her. he tortured her. that’s not my definition of a pathetic loser. at least, just a pathetic loser. i mean, It was clear everything he did with nikki was non-consensual. if not from the first time nikki was at his place and screamed, “what the fuck!” and pushed him back, then clearly when she begged him multiple times to kill her. it was clear he was taking advantage of the situation just as ian told him he looked like and he denied and was taking advantage of the fact that nikki was under the influence of his wish. like this man clearly got off from the power he had over the real nikki. just like all predators.
love the way the director(s) of the movie highlighted this with the ominous music during the sex scene with both of them. clearly, very fucking disturbing.
so yeah, calling him a “pathetic loser” is way humanising than what he actually is.
besides, he’s also dumb as fuck, like, when he went to ian’s place to replace his wish to turn everything back to normal, all he had to say was, “yo, say “i wish nikki was back to normal/loves me the way friends do/everything went back to normal”, then break the stick in the middle.” but he has to blabber the entire existence of the one wish willow and make this entire crazy ass looking speech about how it’s real like mf, you don’t have time.
also the fact that this man knew nikki would quite literally kill for him. (he confirmed it when he asked her “do you really love me more than anyone in the whole world?”), and still went to sarah. never warned the poor soul once that she was practically on nikki’s kill list. this man knew after the entire kiss-the-person-to-your-left fiasco. so i never felt bad for him when he opened sarah’s letter and started screaming (i saw some videos saying “i feel so bad”, with this scene.)
so this man is a predator and a murderer.
details i absolutely loved and feel worth pointing out:
love the fact that usually when a person is covered in blood a normal person would literally do their best to understand and help the situation, but everyone bear meets literally is unfazed by his half bloody hoodie and face, almost like saying that everything is his fault so they have nothing to help him for.
also, love, love, love the attention to the clock ticking in the background. to me it feels like a countdown to bear’s death and a constant reminder to bear that he can never go back until his life is over.
