Starts with the page of Yashiro in the official preview of him reminiscing about Doumeki's words

Then, while covering his face with one hand, he kicks over the container (bucket) filled with water.

Leaning against the wall, he says: “…You’re way too stupid…!"

Scene changes to Tsunakawas place

Doumeki speaks to Tsunakawa

Tsunakawa: “Not going to kneel and apologize like you did four years ago?”

Doumeki: “…I won’t.”

His subordinates force his head down,

Tsunakawa kicks him in the face, and mentions that he knows Doumeki used to stay with Yashiro.

Tsunakawa: “You’ve got guts, showing up here.”

Doumeki: “I’m grateful for being taken in…”

Tsunakawa: “That’s all you’re grateful for?”

Doumeki’s face is pressed into the ground

Tsunakawa begins talking about Doumeki’s past, that he was a former police officer, that he has a younger sister and mother, and that even after prison he could’ve lived as a civilian.

Then he asks: “Why did you become yakuza…?”

This leads to the previewed panel of Doumeki released by the official account

Then, 

Tsunakawa: “What is Yashiro to you?”

Doumeki: “He’s my reason for living.”

Doumeki: “Because he’s someone precious to me, I protected him.” 

Tsunakawa tells him, “Couldn’t you at least hesitate a little?” 

and Ren and the other subordinates beat him badly. (😭😭) 

Tsunakawa: “Go take Kai’s life. Get your affairs in order. You’re a criminal killing another, no telling how many years you’ll eat prison food. And the moment you’re released back into society, you’ll be expelled from the family."

Kamiya is assigned as the witness to oversee it.

Scene changes to a hotel room somewhere

Kamiya hands Doumeki a gun

Doumeki thanks him for everything he’s done.

Kamiya: “You can’t say thank you, but you won’t apologize either? Idiot.”

Doumeki: “I won’t apologize for something I don’t truly mean.”

Doumeki says Tsunakawa isn’t the kind of person who wants apologies.

Kamiya responds that he actually valued Doumeki.

Kamiya: “You betrayed us and fell in love with a man, yeah, that’s not something we can accept.”

Doumeki: “I don’t think gender matters when it comes to someone important.”

Kamiya: “You sound annoyingly righteous.

Not like you ever expected to be understood anyway.

If that’s the case, at least don’t drag others into it.”

Doumeki: “…You’re right. That’s true.”

Then Kamiya brings up Doumeki’s younger sister.

Kamiya also had a younger sister, and says he regrets not being able to protect her (from abusive parents).

Kamiya: “Having parents and siblings…must be nice.”

Doumeki: “…That’s not like you, talking about yourself.”

Also, him being assigned to kill Kai and go to jail 😱😱 though ofc the plot won't be as simple. 

Kamiya had said he wanted to do something big in a previous chapter and here, at the end of this chapter he's suddenly talking about personal things which seems to be out of character as Doumeki says...

Lots of what ifs right there even without including Misumi's assignment for Yashiro involving Kai and Yashiros potential actions after Doumekis words last chapter.

Saezuru chapter 65 spoilers

a crucial piece of info is revealed in chapter 65: kamiya’s sister was killed by their abusive father, and kamiya subsequently killed their father for it. kamiya confesses this in the hotel, when he found out that doumeki acted similarly (attacked his father to protect his sister) while tsunakawa was berating doumeki for everything in the garden. he also says he wishes he had done it sooner, so she would still be alive.

so now this is very interesting and obvious parallel to be drawn between the two, not to mention it gives clarity to why kamiya is the way he is. imagine killing your own father, even justifiably, and still having lost your sister - no one in the world would ever be trustworthy again.

I think this solidifies kamiya’s begrudging respect for doumeki and also sets kamiya up to do something on doumeki’s behalf. I just don’t want him to take the fall either 🫠

Saezuru Chapter 65

Impressions post summary, pre scanlation. ⚠️

Yashiro

Yashiro kicking the bowl of water in Doumeki's place in an outburst can be read as an analogy to him still not being ready to face his contained feelings towards Doumeki or completely losing control of it (also connected to my thoughts about the representation of water in the previous chapter). I assumed that Yashiro would be angry, but upon seeing the panels it looks like his reaction reflects frustration and concern. It might be the case he's thinking Doumeki was stupid for taking things this far because of him. As in, Yashiro is frustrated for not seeing himself as worthy of all this sacrifice. It can likewise be because he has the view of how screwed Doumeki is on the eyes of Tsunakawa. We can't speculate much, since his expression can't be read from his face covered, but there's no denial that Yashiro is in distress.

Doumeki

I reiterate how proud of Doumeki I am, for him not bowing nor apologising to Tsunakawa. His response seems to mirror what he said to Yashiro after their first physical approach post time-skip.

It's interesting to see how, in the context it was said before, both Yashiro and readers were led to believe Doumeki had changed, responding in a way to reflect assertiveness. Now, with the parallel, both scenes can be read as Doumeki showing resolute sincerity regarding his own feelings for Yashiro, to the point of disregarding his own reason to exist otherwise.

As I mentioned in a reblog: living in a default mode seems to be the outcome of those who are swallowed by the yakuza environment without believing in its dynamics (for instance, Nanahara and Amou still seeing the family aspect in the yakuza hierarchy) or aspirations (Misumi and Hirata concerned about successions and their positions). Yashiro and Doumeki couldn't care less about any of this, but while Doumeki openly places the heaviness of his existence on Yashiro, Yashiro didn't lean it on anyone this whole time. In this sense, they are similar in their approach to devalue life, but distinctive on how Yashiro particularly perceives life as total dread with no margin for hope. It's something simply maintained and neglected as it flows.

Tsunakawa

Strong disappointment can be read coming from Tsunakawa, and I personally see it reflected as a father & son relationship dynamic embedded in the yakuza hierarchy. Tsunakawa was expecting to see Doumeki with almost the same lenses Misumi sees Yashiro; it was a massive turn-off to have thrown in his face that this would never happen. Tsunakawa requesting clarity on what Yashiro meant to Doumeki and the lack of hesitation in his reply is another indication on how this favouritism bothered him.

This situation might as well have triggered Tsunakawa for the whole story of not having been initially chosen as the kashira for the Sakuraikka, being replaced by Okuyama. In both cases, Niki is the one who middled changes in the scenario, not himself. Tsunakawa's father didn't want him to be involved in crime because of Niki, but those orders were overpassed upon his death; Doumeki was not welcomed but gained a bit of Tsunakawa's trust after rescuing Niki. In other words, circumstances placed Tsunakawa in the position of respect he archived, but that did not automatically created devotion from those surrounding him.

Some people read Doumeki's action as arrogant and ungrateful, but he does express appreciation for Sakuraikka taking him in. And I agree with his statement to Kamiya: even if he had in fact apologised, Tsunakawa would not be satisfied. Doumeki was as much an asset to Tsunakawa as Tsunakawa was an asset to Doumeki for his objectives. I would even give Doumeki more credit, for saving Niki. The hierarchical difference between the two of them, however, is what makes Doumeki's defiance exponentially more valuable.

After this episode, Tsunakawa definitely has the same beef for Yashiro that he once held for Okuyama. We might have a bigger mess if Yashiro and Okuyama join forces to save Doumeki, as some have speculated.

Kamiya

The star of this chapter, right?! @kayura452 mentioned that he reached Kuga status and I agree. The parallel of his past with Doumeki's seems to be an indication that Doumeki reached several steps above in his regards. Doumeki did what Kamiya wished he could have done sooner; there's an indirect admiration based on guilty of "not having done something big" before, and that might be the main factor to place Kamiya as an ally in the following chapters.

Simultaneously, it's interesting to see how Kamiya doesn't show the same level of understanding when Doumeki's sacrifice involves Yashiro. I wonder if this is only internalised homophobia or if this is justified on the premise that "when it's family, it's ok to get involved". If the last case applies, I have to say that Yashiro has wiser words about this:

And now we seem to be close to a situation shadowing the beginning of volume 7, post time-skip, where both Yashiro and Doumeki were after Kido. This time both are after Kai. Maybe we will have similar segments of their previous "hunt", with Nanahara and Kamiya playing a big part (possibily Okuyama as well). It's difficult to speculate on which direction all of this is going, and we do have to praise Sensei for never disappointing about the development of the story.

What I can say for sure is that I am desperate to see the next course of actions Yashiro will take.

Saezuru & Timing (Ch.66)

When I tell you this story got a hold of me four years ago and I haven't let go since (10+ year veterans you have my greatest respect).

Yoneda Kou's timing with this series is utter perfection and highly strategic. The hiatus', time between chapters, this story having been ongoing for 10+ years, etc. It all lends to the emotional payoff of this story. I saw one spoiler from ch.66 and started to cry. In this media landscape, not much seems to move me. But Saezuru never fails to.

The timing of this series and the slow release genuinely gives us a better look into their world, the pain, indeicison and self denial, and of the reprucussions of living with that decision for years. It's too good guys.

Imagine reading this story as one of the bls you finish in a single night cause you just need have it - hell no. We would miss so much - I just.. ugh it's perfect. I wanna gush all day about her story telling and how she's enrolling the reader in it as well.

I have no one to talk to about this story irl, but I know the people in this community will understand how I feel right now!! Thank you all for your contributions to this community.

nanahara got a phone call in chapter 61 from “sakuraikka”, which I have to imagine was kamiya. so kamiya has nanahara’s phone number. so maybe kamiya can call nanahara and tell him that yashiro’s boyfriend just got ordered to kill kai and will prob spend the next 50 years in jail, hint hint hint someone way smarter (yashiro) should hurry up and fix this please

(I do think yashiro needs a fucking break for the rest of time because why does he always have to save the dumbass men in his life?)
