Anchors Aweigh! - An Ateez Sailing AU
A/n: this is my first fanfic like EVER so, uh, please be gentle? And I hope you enjoy it!
As the two sailboats pushed away from Fix On Sailing Club, Mingi felt alive and free. He always did when he was out in a boat. He pushed the tiller slowly away from him, carefully steering their boat away from the other boat and the club, before he shot one of his signature grins to the other three members of his crew. Yunho, who was operating the mainsail, gave him back a big smile, along with Jongho and San, who were taking turns operating the foresail.
Mingi then turned to face the other departing craft, and almost identical boat, but with four different crew members. Making eye contact with the boy that was helming the other craft, he grinned and raised his ship-board radio to his mouth.
"Promise, Promise, Promise, this is Twilight, Twilight, Twilight, do you copy?" Mingi snickered to himself as he lowered the radio, seeing the other helmsman give him a playful stink eye.
"Twilight this is captain Hongjoong of the fine ship Promise" Hongjoong replied, the smirk on his face evident in his voice even through the distortion and crackling of the radio.
"Just saying hello, Joongie, and making sure the radios worked! Over and listening."
"Copy that, over and listening."
After their brief conversation, the two boats lapsed into silence, a silence only meant to be broken for enquires between the two boats and the sailing club, or in case of emergency.
Mingi looked back over his shoulder to the Promise and after a few seconds he could see her veer off in a different direction from the Twilight. Focusing his eyes back forward, he took a deep breath. He could taste the salt on the breeze as a passing gust tousled his short, light brown hair and simultaneously gave the boat a burst of speed. The sound of the waves against the fiberglass hull made him feel a sense of relaxation that nothing else could quite match.
"Where to, oh Captain my Captain?" San asked, relaxing as Jongho kept the foresail under control. He was leaned back against the gunwales, hands behind his head, in a semi-seated position.
"How about up and around the islands? That would be a good course, especially on such a good day as today!" Yunho interjected, his smile as big as ever, eyes sparkling with energy and happiness at getting to be out on the water with his friends.
"I mean you're not the captain," Mingi laughed, leaning over to give the older boy's shoulder a gentle shove, "but that sounds like a good time to me!"
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's GO!" Jongho yelled into the breeze, head tilted back and face to the sky, the other three boys laughing as they adjusted their course.
Putting the radio back down next to him after his chat with Mingi, Hongjoong gave a brief, satisfied sigh before deciding on a sailing path.
"Crew, stand by to go about" he called to the other boys in the boat. Seonghwa, on mainsail, prepared to pull the main in and jump to the other side, while Wooyoung got ready to pass control of the foresail to Yeosang.
"Ready, about!" Hongjoong called, pushing the tiller away from him. Seonghwa pulled the main in fast, and the boat made its turn.
"Let draw!" was the next command out of Hongjoong's mouth, and at the call, Wooyoung released his grip on his rope while Yeosang pulled hard on his.
In just a few seconds, the boat and crew had flawlessly executed a turn.
"Well done, boys. Perfect day for sailing!" Seonghwa remarked, taking a moment to glance up beyond the large mainsail to the cloud-spotted cerulean sky above them, sun shining brightly.
"You said it!" Wooyoung quipped brightly, leaning his back over the gunwales, arms spread out next to him like outstretched wings; almost mirroring San in the other boat exactly.
"Mmm. I'm glad we came out, we would've been fools not to." Yeosang said, edging his foot toward an unsuspecting Wooyoung's feet. He waited for one second, then two - at which point he kicked one of his feet up and off of where it had been braced. The sudden balance change elicited a panicked squawk from the formerly relaxed boy, and in turn caused laughter amongst the others as an embarrassed Wooyoung leaned over and smack Yeosang's shoulder.
Lunch, which had been packed in dry bags and tossed into the boats along with bottles of water before they had disembarked from the club, was eaten in the boats. When it was decided it was lunchtime, the commands were given in each boat:
"Put 'er in Irons, let's eat!"
At which point the sails were let go, allowed to flap softly in the breeze. The boats simply drifted along by momentum and the currents now, no tension in the sails and ropes to allow the wind any say in propulsion. They ate quietly, the only sounds being the flap of polyester fabric, the soft slosh of water against the hulls of the boats, and the occasional seagull. It was peaceful. A re-pack of the dry bags with their food remnants and a sunscreen re-application later, and boats were on the move again, the cheerful conversations and __ debates of the members lofted away into the sky.
As the time flowed closer towards the evening, the Promise and the Twilight made began to make their way back to the club. Mingi's radio suddenly crackled to life, with a
"Twilight, Twilight, Twilight, this is Promise over." as Hongjoong radioed.
"Promise this is Twilight, what’s up?"
"How would you feel about a little race between us back to the club?" The competitiveness in Hongjoon's voice was almost tangible, and with a chorus of affirmations from his crew, Mingi responded with a confident,
"I hope you're ready to lose! You're on!"
The boats lined up, and on Hongjoong's mark through the radio, the two boats leaped forwards, slicing through the waves. They sped along at the same pace for most of the distance, a neck and neck sprint until they started maneuvering to dock. Then Promise nosed ahead just a little, before Mingi managed to snatch the edge of a wind gust, which pushed Twilight forward just enough for it to slide up to the dock first. Ridiculously close behind, Hongjoong pulled Promise up to the dock, and from there it was a mad dash between the two crews to get the boats tied to the dock first.
As Jongho jumped out of Twilight to tie her up, Yeosang had already finished tying and had just stood up to start helping de-rig the mast and sails. The two crews neck and neck once again, the mainsails were pulled down in quick order, boom detached from mast, and the whole bundle lifted onto the dock to be carried away. Then came the foresail, heaped in a messy pile with the ropes for the sails. Hongjoong looked up for just a second at Promise from where he was tying their ropes up to see Mingi hand Jongho the dripping rudder, which was quickly taken to be put away. Then, Mingi grabbed Yunho and the two of them began to carefully lower the mast.
Hongjoong didn't realize he'd stopped tying until it was too late - and just as he started again, Jongho and San returned from putting things away and the mast was lifted onto the dock. Twilight was cleaned out, just a few steps ahead of Promise. As the crew of Twilight cheered at their success, Promise's mast was lowered and put away. Brief congratulations were exchanged between crews, and then idle chatter ensued as they brought the boats back up and onto their trailers.
"Wait, who’s that?" Jongho asked, pointing at a truck that was just pulling into the club's parking lot, a boat trailer in tow.
"I have no idea, but that boat looks a little old, if you ask me!" San quipped as his eyes landed on what could barely be called a boat sitting on the trailer.
“You said it.” Seonghwa mumbled, shuddering slightly at how dirty and run down the decrepit craft looked. “Definitely not at its best.”
The truck ran suddenly through a pothole in the asphalt, causing the vehicle and its load to lurch. Mechanical creaking and the distinct sound of wood cracking and crumbling reached their ears, along with shouts.
"Woah, slow down grandpa! Careful!" A voice, faint and somewhat hard to hear, yelled out. "I still want her in as close to one piece as possible!" then even fainter laughter as the truck slowed to a stop just by the front doors of Fix On.
The boys paused for a few seconds longer, long enough that they could see Mingi's dad come out of the club to meet a pair of other people, who had both come out of the truck.
"I wonder who they are…" Yeosang's thought out loud snapped the group back to attention, and they worked on getting their two boats into the shed where they belonged and taken care of for next time.
By the time they had finished getting everything cleaned and locked up, the truck and mysterious people were gone.
