Sake in small bottles 1 Taruzake Chōryō-shuzō, Kitakatsuragi-gun Nara Maboroshi no Taki ginjō nama chozōshu Mikunihare-shuzō, Kurobe-shi Toyama My boujee supermarket suddenly stocked a big variety of sake in 180 mL bottles, so I decided to give some a try. It's a nice way to explore different kinds without splashing out for a full bottle. The taruzake is stored in cedar casks to give it a lovely aroma. It was slightly sweet with flavors of cedar and orange peel and nicely balanced umami and acidity. It went well with a cheese sauce pasta (think a fancy mac and cheese), and would complement smoked cheese or sausage as well. 9🍶/10 Maboroshi no Taki was much more restrained, very light and dry with a slightly medicinal finish. It didn't knock my socks off, but would have been much better with sashimi and other light seafood. By the way, 'maboroshi' is a wonderful, difficult-to-translate word meaning illusory, dreamlike, phantasmic, but 'maboroshi no taki' can refer to a waterfall that appears only in spring as snow is melting from the mountains.
