@skeleton-richard is in town this weekend (YAY) and so, as we usually do, we went to the art museum and one of the things on display was an Italian Renaissance John the Baptist that I'd never seen before (the display card indicates it is a recent acquisition). And I gotta wonder. Leonardo and his workshop were in fact in Florence in the early 1500s (like, 1504-05), doing disastrous fresco painting at the Palazzo Vecchio and pissing off Michelangelo (not a difficult thing to do).

Was Salaì doing some extra modeling for other artists while they were there?

I am not sure how seriously I wonder about this. It's probably more likely that Salaì's actual features lined up with the types of features that were already considered ideal for a young man: curly hair, straight nose, big round face (in the time period that was a feature, not a bug). But the resemblance of the statue to Leonardo's depictions of Salaì seems juuuuust idiosyncratic enough, and the possible dates line up enough, that I'm just kind of like "HUH."
