Have you ever seen a Savi’s spectacled salamander (Salamandrina perspicillata)… without spectacles? I did thanks to my @elenacanessa who found it yesterday while I was busy photographing other ones into the water. Each individual is unique and every mutation from “the norm” is another way nature shows us how we must care about everyone of them, on Earth. #amphibian #amphibianweek #salamandrina #dark #black #blackmetalsalamander #melanic #conservation #italy #herping #herpingtheglobe @ilcp_photographers @naturepicturelibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/CdD8jtDKoXd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hey! It’s still #AmphibianWeek so I’m keeping on posting, by celebrating one of my preferred and uniquely Italian Amphibians: the Spectacled Salamanders. This is one of the two species: Salamandrina perspicillata. Here’s a “duo” of images of the deposition frenzy that is going on right now in a beautiful place close to my hometown. Tens of females gather in small rock pools of little streams to deposit their eggs on walls and submerged stems. It’s a wonderful phenomenon that I never want to miss, each year. #amphibian #salamander #salamandrinaperspicillata #salamandrina #underwater #isotta_underwater_housings #nikon #wideangle #spring #picoftheday @ilcp_photographers @amphibianfoundation https://www.instagram.com/p/CdGua2IqauJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
An Italian endemic, the Savi’s Spectacled salamander (Salamandrina perspicillata) is one of the two only Salamandrina species living on Earth and they’re both only living in my country. Here’s one in diurnal activity (it was about 11:30 a.m.) in central Italy, a early November of 2014. #amphibians #salamanders #salamandrina #italy #conservation #beauty #wood #herps #herpsofinstagram #picoftheday #urodela @ilcp_photographers https://www.instagram.com/p/CRjaddiKicY/?utm_medium=tumblr

(>>Slide for more shots) Some nights ago I witnessed a magic moment! Many Savi’s spectacled salamanders (Salamandrina perspicillata) males were standing up like this one along the path in a small wood around my city. They were waiting for a female to mate with and their position was both funny and somewhat “eroic” to me! This species is still rather locally abundant in Italy but it’s nonetheless menaced by overgrowth of cities and land exploitation. It’s a unique vertebrate, the only endemic Vertebrate genus of Italy (excluding the newborn genus Atylodes from Sardinia of course) and the whole World only hosts two species of this genus, only in Italy. #amphibian #conservation #salamandrina #salamander #herping #herps #portrait #macro #jewels #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #1frame4nature @ilcp_photographers
A tiny young Northern spectacled salamander (Salamandrina perspicillata) doing the “unkenreflex” posture to show its red warning parts on the underside of legs and tail. It’s the way they say “beware, don’t eat me, I’m toxic!!”. #predatoridelmicrocosmo #salamandrina #salamander #amphibians #italy #herps #herpsofinstagram
