Fictober #18, I Think I See It

Prompt: I Think I See It

Fandom: Endeavour

Pairing: Endeavour Morse/Sam Thursday

When they first met, it was nothing but a crush – it couldn’t be anything else. He had barely admitted to himself that he was – different, then, different to other men, different to what Dad expected of him, so of course he couldn’t understand why his heart beat faster when he looked into these blue-green eyes.

Still, he was happy that Dad seemed to like his new bagman, and that everything seemed to be going well – that was the exception rather than the rule when it came to Dad’s colleagues.

And over time, despite the hat stand rule, they heard a few things – that Morse was the cleverest of them all, if he could just learn to now and then play by the rules of the police, meaning he ought to treat his higher-ups a little more reverently (that one was a bit strong, coming from Dad); that he got injured way too often and never took the time to heal properly (Mum was of course horrified); and that he usually had a girl somewhere, but that they seemed to change so often Dad had given up learning their names (that one – that one hurt, and it ought to have taught him to stay away, but didn’t).

At least, though, these feelings let him know – made him realize that – well – there were some things he should better stay away from –

So much for the Army – all his plans suddenly shrivelled and died.

Mum and Dad, it had to be owed, were rather happy when he went to work at the Post Office.

And today –

He had no idea why he had even gone to see the exhibition. Boredom, he supposed, since Joann was away for work, and Mum and Dad couldn’t expect to entertain their adult child on weekends.

But anyway, it was one of those modern painters, the ones who seemed to have decided that they were not on this earth to paint anything one could identify, and he was staring at a lot of green on a canvas and wondering if you could really make money off of it when he suddenly heard, “Hello.”

He turned around and stared into those expressive eyes, and his heart picked up a beat. “Heya, Morse.”

He smiled (again, his heart beat faster).

“Should have known I’d see you here” Sam said.

Another smile, another –

But really, that didn’t have to mean anything. He could just be friendly, and perhaps invite Morse out for a drink in the pub afterwards even though Dad would be none too pleased about that. “What do you think this is supposed to be?” he finally asked because he ought to say something. He couldn’t just be standing here staring at the man, or soon everyone would know…

“According to the artist” Morse said, reading the description which Sam never bothered to do, “It is an exploration of the infinite possibilities of the human condition.”

They were silent and stared at the wall of green.

“I think I see it” he finally said because he sort of did, but sort of didn’t, but that seemed to be the right thing to say because Morse smiled that gentle smile of his.

“I am rather sure it’s not about actually seeing something but since you said I think, we might be on the right path.”

That sounded – well, that sounded so much like Morse that he couldn’t help but laugh. “If you say it, I’m going to take it as a given – Dad always says you’re smart-.”

He – he actually blushed.

Yes, he decided, he was most definitely going to invite him for a drink…

And he did, but he could never have foreseen what happened then.

They only had had one drink each, so they couldn’t even blame it on that, and when he woke up the next day in Morsels bed – even now, he hadn’t told him his first name – he hastily left and they pretended it had never happened –

For about a week or so, and then he returned, and –

Over time, it became routine, and – dare he say it – they were happy.

Even so, he could hardly believe it when Endeavour – he had finally admitted to it – asked him if he wanted to move in with him.

Just like him, throwing caution to the wind –

He said yes, of course.

And then they were living together, slept, ate, lo – even though they had never given that thing between them a name – one evening they were – well – fooling around on the sofa when Joan, the only other person with a key, came in and exclaimed, “I ended things with Jim – he wants a house wife, someone he can show off to his freemasons – oh, don’t jump boys, you won’t act like I didn’t know?”

He looked at Endeavour, and he shrugged and got up to pour them all drinks.

He glanced Joan, but she was happily grinning at them.

Well.

Why not enjoy all of this, then?

Tux Tuesday Goes Thursday Thursday

I've had these pics of Jack Bannon and Roger Allam for a while and haven't ever quite figured out what to do with them.

Today I'm just gonna pretend they're Sam and Fred all dressed up...

Thinking about the time I was reading an Endeavour fic and it implied that Sam was the elder of the Thursday kids and it threw me so much I almost exited the fic right there.

Like I'm SORRY? In what world is Joan not the oldest she has SUCH oldest vibes Sam is her BABY BROTHER she was so mad when he got taller than her, she lords it over him sometimes she could convince him to do anything for her for years, Sam has such absolute baby of the family vibes I cannot believe someone would think he's older than Joan.

As both a younger sister and an older sister, Joan is 100% the elder of the two and I will die on that hill.

Opinions of the Thursday family on other characters played by their actors:-

Win: she's incredibly chuffed that Caroline was in Coronation Street. The whole family sat and watched *The New Worst Witch* and Fred will never ever, ever admit to how flustered he was by the Miss Hardbroom costume.

Sam: would have much preferred Jack to have played Batman, but omfg young Alfred Pennyworth will do, that's phenomenal.

Joan: she and Sam watched s3 of Shetland and s2 of Guilt. Their parents are banned from seeing either. She is rather jealous of Sara's accent.

Fred: "Oh for goodness' sake, why couldn't Roger be playing a Labour minister instead?!" "To be fair, Dad, I can absolutely imagine you declaring that you're bored of this and are going for a Twix." "What has Morse been telling yoooou... HANG ON THAT LIBERAL MAN LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE A MAN THAT TRIED TO KILL ME!" "WHO TRIED TO KILL YOU, FRED, AND WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME!??!" Anyway, they all watched that Globe *Tempest* together, and Joan refrained heroically from making pointed comments about Prospero's behaviour with Miranda re Ferdinand (at least Roger's Prospero is a lot less... weird about his daughter than some). Win absolutely doesn't have a crush on both Douglas Richardson and Antoine Verlaque, shut up. Fred's been humming "Stars" from Les Mis under his breath at work and it's driving Morse absolutely mad.
