Sam Arias Week Prompt: L-Corp

It’s 8:49 when it happens. Sam is staring at the same numbers that she’s been staring at for the past four hours. And then the screen and everything around her go black. Sam hears a yelp from the hallway and her mind goes to the worst-case scenario. There’s a villain on the loose in National City, again. 

Sam will not die here. 

She musters up some strength and courage that stems from that time when Ruby wanted her to be a hero. It seems that feeling - power, fear, and adrenaline - never goes away. Despite her better judgment, Sam runs toward danger and is met with-

“Jess?” It’s hilarious, really. The way that Jess is balled up at her desk, feet tucked under her like the floor is hot lava. Sam understands now. “It’s okay.” Jess is afraid of the dark and the lights have gone out which is a completely normal occurrence. Sam turns when she sees a bright phone flashlight coming their way. 

The heels and the ungodly hour, suggest Lena. Like always, Sam, Lena, and Jess are the last ones standing at L-Corp on a Friday night. 

“Fucking unbelievable. The generators haven’t kicked in.” Lena goes straight to Jess and wraps a supportive arm around her shoulders. “Poor thing, I’ll call you a cab home.” It’s sweet and thoughtful, two Luthor traits that are only reserved for people that Lena loves. 

Sam checks her phone. “Shit, it’s late.” Lena and Sam start packing Jess’s things. “Seriously, you need to go home.” 

“I can stay,” Jess protests to no avail. 

“You’re young. I mean this in the most loving way possible, but: get a life.” Jess laughs and Sam calls her an Uber before she can try and make up some excuse. Though the trek down the stairs will be a long one, Sam sighs in relief, when Jess texts her that she is safely in the Uber a few minutes later. 

Which leaves Lena and Sam alone. The hustle and bustle of a normal workday has subsided and with Ruby at a sleepover, Sam is reluctant to call it a night. Sam knows that Lena would rather spend the night here than go home to her cold apartment, so she laughs. The thrill of nighttime in an office that is usually as pristine as their business attire has hit her all at once. They can do anything. 

“Come on.” Sam grabs Lena’s hand and leads her to the common kitchen area. Based on Lena’s confusion when they enter the room, she has never ventured this far down the hallway. “Jess orders the best snacks.” 

“Snacks?” Lena confuses Sam in the best ways. They’ve known each other for years. They’ve overcome intense mergers, highly criticized acquisitions, and 14 flights in the span of two weeks together. And yet. Sam can’t seem to crack Lena’s shell. Sure they drink whiskey some nights and complain about work or briefly mull over their childhood trauma through banter laden with sarcasm. But it isn’t enough for Sam. 

“Lena, you’re killing me. Have you even tried a Poptart before?”

“A what?” If Ruby was here, she’d toast two Poptarts and put marshmallows and chocolate between them like some kind of insane dessert sandwich. Sam won’t go that far and she decides to stick to readymade snacks. Like chocolate-covered blueberries, pickle-flavored chips, and Twizzlers. Lena watches her with a horrified look on her face. 

“You haven’t lived until you’ve eaten at least one of these.” 

“I think I’d rather die.” 

“Lena…” It’s Lena’s sense of pride that coaxes her to try a Twizzler. But she smiles as she tastes it and rolls her eyes when Sam shows her how to make a Twizzler into a straw. “I’m a kid at heart,” Sam tells Lena. 

“I know.” Lena laughs. “It’s one of the many things that I love...like about you.” They settle into silence. Lena shucks the cardigan that she wears in her office on late nights. It falls over the back of her chair. The light from outside the building hits Lena so softly that Sam actually catches herself staring. “It’s Dior, I bought it online.” Sam blinks a few times. 

“I wasn’t staring at the dress,” Sam tells her. “Idiot.” Lena, based on her reaction, has never been called an idiot in her life. She’s doubled over laughing, cheeks rosy, eyes sparkling in a way that Sam has never seen before. Her walls are down now. Sam can tell because Lena sticks two Twizzlers in her mouth and giddily grabs Sam’s hands. 

“Follow me.” 

They go to Lena’s office. Lena’s safe place, Sam thinks. Sam wonders if the dark has sparked something in Lena. She looks excited as she grabs a bottle of wine and looks for the bottle opener. “This is Lex’s wine. Aged for sixty years. Worth a fucking fortune.” Lena finds the bottle opener and then, with the help of her phone’s flashlight, she finds two glasses. “I don’t know why I’ve been hanging onto it. At this point, it seems more like a morbid trophy. We should toast.” 

“A toast to...your dead brother?” 

“A toast to...life.” It’s the most openly optimistic Lena has ever been in front of Sam. They do toast, they do stare at each other over the rim of their wine glasses, and they do tiptoe around the inevitable. “I’m grateful for you.” 

“You’re sappier than usual.” 

“It’s just us.” 

“Things are different when it’s just us, then?” This is the only time that Sam has ventured into this territory. If it goes south, then she’s screwed. She and Lena have been testing the grounds for too long and Sam’s patience isn’t there anymore. “Look…”

“I know…” Lena nods her head. “For the record, when you’re sitting there in meetings, you doodle adorable cartoons and it makes me realize how easy life is. How easy life has been when the right people are there.” Lena doesn’t kiss her like Sam might expect. Instead, Lena’s eyes dart to the balcony door where radiant music is pulsing through from the street far below them. “You’re easy to fall for.” They must realize that this is a conversation best had another time. Right now, the music is calling them. 

They make it out on the balcony, pausing briefly at the door, eyes darting between lips and smiles coming through clearly in the darkness. 

Lena Luthor is the worst dancer on the planet. She is all left feet, elbows, and knees and still - wrapped up in Sam’s arms - they find a rhythm all their own. Sam hasn’t slow-danced since middle school. But it comes naturally. Lena’s breath is warm against her neck. Her hair is soft under Sam’s touch. 

Tonight is a gesture from them both. You are safe with me. They don’t kiss but they do dance up there on the balcony of a company that Lena’s family built. Sam’s eyes remind Lena that families can be chosen and if they want, they can choose each other.

Sam Arias Week: Day 1 Ruby

Imagine.

Now with this new Prime Earth and time line shit, things are different but with everyone's memories back they have forgotten about their Prime Earth memories which holds some vital information on certain thing. So just imagine one day Lena and friends invite Sam over for game night when she's in NC and she rocks up like: "Hey, peeps, I hope you don't mind I brought my sister, she's new in town."

Everyone's like: "Sister?". Sam's like: "My twin.." and then in walks Reign with her dorky smiley smirk, holding like seven pizzas.

Everyone's just like: "Fuck..."

Ruby

“See-saw, knock at the door, who’s there?” Sam said to her daughter in a silly voice as she rocked her back and forth.

“Ru-by!” Her 18 month old proudly proclaimed.

“What does she want?” Sam continued with the old lullaby.

“A bottle of milk!” Ruby said.

“Where’s ya money?” Sam asked.

“In my pock-et.”

“Oh yeah, where’s ya pocket?” Sam said as she started to make a silly face like Popeye the Sailor.

“In my pants!” Ruby started giggling.

Sam could barely keep it together. They both knew the punchline but even after singing in 20 times already today (not to mention countless other times), it hadn’t stopped being funny to Ruby...and Ruby’s laughter was infectious to Sam.

“Where’s ya pants?!” Sam exclaimed, still using her silly voice but with a higher pitch that time.

“I left them home!” Ruby giggled even harder.

“GET OUT OF HERE YA OLD GOAT!” Sam finished as she started tickling Ruby, now laughing uncontrollably.

“Again Mommy, again!” Ruby said.

Sam wiped some tears from laughter from her eyes. “Again, baby, again. Ready?” She said, holding her daughter as she got ready to rock her back and forth for the 20something-th time that day.
