Luke Gazdic travels to lqaluit, Nunavut to join Jordin Tootoo, Sami Jo Small, Joe Thornton and more for a one-of-a-kind benefit hockey game between Toronto Maple Leafs alumni and NHL alumni.

The event was organized by Hockey Helps the Homeless, a charity raising awareness and funds toward homelessness and food insecurity across Canada.

If anyone out there is looking for something hockey-related to keep them occupied during the off season, I would recommend Sami Jo Small's The Role I Played: Canada's Greatest Olympic Hockey Team. I just finished it recently and really liked it!

It's autobiography from Sami Jo Small focusing on her times with Canada's national team. She has a very engaging writing style and it's a really interesting look at what it's like being a starting goalie as well as what it's like to have to serve as the 3rd string goalie. Additionally as a newer fan to women's hockey I found the look behind the scenes of the pre-PWHL woho world to be quite fascinating.

PLUS any PWHL fans out there well appreciate that there's plenty of Becky Kellar and Cheryl Pounder moments from her time as their teammate.

Because @caitthegreatest is very very nice to me and told me who the goalie defender on TSN is I will tell you all about Sami Jo Small.

Former Team Canada, Toronto Furies, Mississauga Chiefs, and Brampton Thunder goal tender.

She graduated from Stanford with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Small co-founded the Canadian Women’s hockey league, and was the general manager to the Toronto Furries!

In 2020 she released her autobiography "The Role I Played: Canada’s Greatest Olympic Hockey Team," and was host of the podcast “Sami Jo's Podcast: Building a Stronger Team”.

She currently works as a public speaker but has done a lot of advocacy work, including being an ambassador for the organization ‘Right to play’. One of the organizations she is an ambassador for just changed their branding from ‘Fast and Female’ to ‘Girls Forward’ in order to be more inclusive to transgender and non-binary hockey players.

Small also has a hockey school that has been running since 1998!

In terms of her personal life she is married to Billy Bridges who is a Canadian Ice Sledge hockey Olympian and national player. They have a daughter and dogs together.

Anyways I think she is neat.

If there is no white knight that comes down the pipeline to sort of create a new league, then we as players and stake-holders within the game create something new. That could be an exciting future for our game as well...we will have an on-ice product come September.

Questions, frustration remain in wake of CWHL's decision to fold - Sportsnet.ca

The CWHL's players and staff found out via a conference call that their board of directors has decided to cease operations of the League. Players had no idea this was coming. Nor did the League's six general managers or the women who founded it. Now, all eyes turn to the next steps.

From Small’s standpoint, her hope is that the Furies organization remains. And if there are no viable options for women to play pro hockey in Canada, the GM says there’s no reason why players couldn’t once again start a league themselves. That’s what happened in 2007, when owners walked away and players, including Small, came together to start the CWHL.

“We were able to start this 12 years ago, and we have the information of how to get the league to this point,” Small says. “I think we can do that together. I’m not fearful there won’t be a league, I just don’t know what iteration it will be.
