Once again I am baffled by people’s conclusion that Fabian’s under developed story in Tough Guy should have had him change his perspective on hockey players at least a little. Like once again this book is about the systemic dehumanization that players and marginalized players go through. Fabian coming away from it liking hockey players more isn’t the arch I think people would hope it was.
You can argue that Fabian can have more hope that players who are impacted by this system can create a better space, but there isn’t a world where Fabian would have been accepted in hockey circles. Tolerated maybe, and in small groups Iike with Wyatt Hayes maybe even liked, but what’s that going to do? Really in the long term.

so fucking funny to me that rachel reid wrote game changer in which scott was really struggling with being closeted in an ostensibly all-straight field, then wrote heated rivalry where scott's coming out is hugely pivotal for shane and ilya when they realise that they're not alone in this all-straight field, and THEN wrote tough guy in which ryan price just casually drops "oh yeah i've been fucking guys and not even hiding it a little bit for almost ten years, but i'm 6'7" and I have no friends so no one ever talked about it". like rachel reid what do you mean???? and then no one else in the series ever acknowledges this??? scott hunter stealing your thunder forever??? not a single guy from your NINE teams ever said 'hey did anyone else ever see price checking his grindr notifications c.2013?'???? i'm crying
also, like, he's the one with actual clinical anxiety. like, okay, i get that maybe his fear of flying trumps everything else. but still, when you have clinical anxiety, usually you have room to be anxious about multiple things. and this seems like a very natural thing to be anxious about in his circumstance
and like...it's sorta an interesting choice. HE's the one who is the most nonchalant about it, out of all of them. but like...i feel like it needed a little bit more examination? exposition? justification? like...it does raise a lot of questions that Reid basically handwaves and just doesn't bother to try to explain
I can see how it could come off that way for a lot of people but I found his behavior regarding his sexuality made a lot of sense. He doesn't think of himself as someone attractive or even interesting. His self-esteem is so low that it's like he's confirming his own bad opinion of himself by dropping all those hints. When they don't get picked up or he's not asked about them, he's comforted that he's right, he's not worth the attention.
I think he's not anxious about it because while he's secure in his sexual orientation itself, he's so sure that he's not appealing to anyone that it's not even a metric by which he thinks of himself.
I'm sure him being gay was discussed between his teammates. I think Ilya knew and his "he's not like you'd imagine" is about that. Ryan is probably that one player who's the secret everyone keeps without needing to be asked to. From his perspective, because no one cares. From a realistic POV, the reasons are probably a mix of "it's none of my business", "it's the decent thing to do" and "he'd kick my ass if I say anything"
My opinion on Ryan Price’s sexuality in Tough Guy is that it actually makes complete sense that he was never formally “outed” despite the fact that he was, by his own admission, not particularly subtle about hooking up with men.
A lot of the discussion around Ryan seems to assume that hockey culture is so uniformly hostile that even the rumor of a player being gay would immediately become a scandal, but I think Ryan’s specific social position changes that equation entirely. He is not Scott Hunter, a charismatic franchise player heavily invested in being liked by his teammates and the league at large. Ryan is a 6’7” enforcer with severe anxiety, almost no close interpersonal relationships, and a career defined by constantly moving between teams. He exists socially on the periphery of hockey culture rather than inside it.
The implication is less “nobody knew” and more “nobody asked.” Straight hockey players are not accidentally identifying Grindr notifications for ten years across nine teams with zero rumors circulating. But there is also a significant difference between privately suspecting something and publicly confronting someone about it, especially when that someone is both physically intimidating and emotionally withdrawn. Realistically, most homophobic players are not going to walk up to the league’s scariest enforcer and ask him if he sucks dick. Ryan’s entire role on the ice is violence, that alone discourages a certain kind of scrutiny.
I also think his indifference toward being “found out” is tied to his self-esteem issues. Ryan does not carry himself like someone hiding a secret he believes people are deeply interested in discovering. He carries himself like someone fundamentally convinced he is unimportant and undesirable. His sexuality is not a central source of anxiety because his self-hatred manifests in a different direction entirely: he assumes nobody is paying attention to him enough to care.

Okay I finally purchased my ticket to the draft. Took me forever to decide if I wanted to miss 3 days of work. I may live in the state, but that’s like 3 hours there and back. But I would rather regret going than not going. And I don’t think I will regret it.
If you are going and want a Duck message me and we’ll make sure to get you a Duck!
ominous. they are coming for your hometown heroes.
Danièle Sauvageau confirmed players pushed through injuries (we knew it), virus, but also death of family members??? We did not know that, or I can’t remember they talked about it.
Montreal was resilient and everyone had hurdles they overcame
I love how Poulin is spotting Stacey so that she can catch her if she falls.

The thing I hope for most during this season of expansion is that all players get to go to a team they want to go to or stay with the team they want to stay with. None of this forcing players to teams against their wills.
If this is the case, then I can make it through the heart ache of expansion. (My manta for the next couple weeks)
Personally the idea of stealing players who are branded to a region and clearly want to be on their current teams, just seems like a bad idea!
People can yell at me for not being enough of a sports person all they want, but people happy where they are in a culture that feels good to them are going to perform better for you and want to work on those relationships!
I would want to think about who wants to move, what team identity/play style I want to form, who is going to be committed to that, and creating a culture where everyone feels challenged but has a say.
Like obviously they will all go where they get pulled and do their best no matter what, but if I’m dragging someone by the back of their jersey I’m not going to expect the same performance out of them as someone who leaps into my arms. And that’s just human psychology.
But I’ve never been a coach or player either 🤷.
Had an amazing time at The Big Flock last weekend!! I'm a bad social media poster and forgot to post pics. Everyone was so lovely and I've never been to an event like this before so it was awesome seeing everyone's work 🤩
