The Trouble with Semi Pak in YIIK: A Postmodern RPG

So a big part of the controversy around YIIK: A Postmodern RPG was their decision to base the character Semi (Sammy) Pak off of the real woman Elisa Lam, who died mysteriously and tragically in 2013. However YIIK is not exactly unique in this regard. Many TV shows, movies and even songs have payed tribute to the strange events surrounding Elisa Lam and taking inspiration from real world events is common in the world of fiction.

So why does its inclusion in YIIK feel so weird and gross?

I think it comes down to framing mostly. 

Sammy is presented as something of a love interest for main character Alex, they share barely any time together before she’s gone from the story and is reduced to a goal that he can chase after and obsess over. Which just leaves a bad taste in ones mouth considering that she’s based off of a real woman who died tragically. If Alex’s obsession with finding Sammy was framed more out of moral obligation and the instinctual human drive to make sense of the bizarre circumstances of her disappearance I think it might have sat a lot better with players.

Another problem is that Sammy’s disappearance is distinctly supernatural. There’s no question about it, we see it. The Elisa Lam case is so notorious because its surrounded by strange and mysterious circumstances and questions that have not yet fully been answered. There are many rational explanations that one can give for it but even then nothing seems to fully add up, causing some people to suspect something supernatural. I think that presenting Sammy’s disappearance as purely and unquestionably supernatural does it’s original influence some disrespect. If you’re going to base a part of your story off of the Elisa Lam case you should do your best to capture the ambiguity of the situation if nothing else.

Here’s how I would have done it:

Alex and Sammy finish their conversation

Alex gets off the Elevator and says goodbye to Sammy

Sammy gives Alex a wave and gets back on the elevator

As Alex is walking back down the forest path he realizes that Sammy’s cat, Dahli, has followed him. He tries to shoo her away but she won’t go.

He thinks about going back to return her but then he remembers 

The groceries! 

If he goes home without them his mom isn’t gonna be happy and it’s getting late, the store will be closed soon.

Alex decides to bring Dahli back tommorrow.

He returns to the factory hotel the next day and searches it up and down but he can’t find Sammy. She’s just gone.

And instead of the images on Onism directly mirroring the camera footage from the Elisa Lam case, I’d have them simply show Sammy getting on the elevator on the ground floor and then the elevator doors opening on the next floor with no Sammy inside.

This hints at something strange going on while also leaving room for plenty of rational explanations. Sammy could have just...left. Skipped town. Alex only had one conversation with her, he doesn’t really know anything about her or what would be normal or abnormal behavior for her.

“Father is Blessed to.... Soon-hwa Choi”

Long-time Moonie Rocky Noble, who has shown sympathies to both the H1 (Hyun Jin) and H2 (Hyung Jin) camps, thinks she is channeling Moon. She recently posted this on their facebook:

Some have seen the announcement Father asked me to make concerning the fact that neither Mrs. Han nor Mrs. Kang are at His side as completed Eve and the love of His heart bringing joy to God. Finally. God and both Messiahs have Joy. Father is Blessed to Kyung Jin Sammy Moon's Mom now the Mrs. Moon Choi Soon Wha.Annie

Well, on Friday Mr. Sang Ik Choi also known as Papa San and referred to by Father as Bong Choon Choi victorious pioneer missionary to Japan in Father's autobiography As a Peace Loving Global Citizen,  ascended.  

He was brought to Father. He saw that Mrs. Han was not sitting next to Father. He was very uneasy. I thought he would be OK because maybe he did not see the announcement. 

He said he had seen it but had not accepted it. 

I could feel within him and his wife the entire life time of accomplishments in jeopardy. He loves Father so much and to have missed joining with Father's heart and message, before arriving before Father in spirit world was not reassuring. 

I was given the honor of providing reassuring words to him. He is at peace.

It took about a day to realize he had told me to tell the person I spoke with shortly after and again  tonight. It was not Father or my husband, but Sang ik Choi himself. 

I am being told that he wants me to tell this story, because he "does not want others to find themselves in spirit world under the same circumstances." 

"To understand and embrace this message of joy from Father while you are on earth is much better. It is very important to take heed NOW. Not later. "

I pray for each of you brothers and sisters. God bless you. God wishes the best for each of you

She also wrote:

Sang Sik Choi founding original Unification missionary to Japan is upset with himself upon reaching spirit world last Friday.

He had seen the message that Father is Blessed to Annie Choi. But had rejected that message given to me for the sake of all members to understand it.

He is telling his story from spirit world to encourage others to believe this while still on earth. It will help them when we get to spirit world ourselves and stand before Father.

My father believed he had to model the life of the biblical Jacob by marrying two blood sisters and have 12 sons with the sisters and their handmaidens. Like Jacob, my father planned to first marry the older sister (my aunt) in 1960 and then seven years later, divorce her and then marry the younger more favored sister, who was my mother. In the years leading up to 1960, most everyone in the church knew about my father’s marital plans to marry both my aunt and my mother, and acknowledged my mother as the future “True Mother” of the Unification Church. According to my father, if he was going to get his mission right, he needed to get these crucial relationships within the Choi family right, by modeling what the Biblical Jacob did.

ADULTERY AND SAMMY PAK

In these Pak family photographs we see the child Sammy Pak. We learned in 1998 from Un Jin Moon during the Sixty Minutes interview with her and her sister-in-law, Nan Sook Hong, that Sammy Pak was actually her half brother and had been the product of an adulterous relationship with her father and another woman during his marriage to Hak Ja Han, the True Mother of all humankind. Sammy was never known publicly to be the son of Sun Myung Moon - he was raised by Bo Hi Pak's wife as Jin Kyung Pak and never appeared in any of the Moon family photographs. Why is it the son of the Lord of the Second Advent needed to be hidden from Unification Church members?

In one photograph Sammy is sitting to the right on Moon's lap. His facial features are completely different to the Pak children who all resemble their father. In the other photograph Sammy is sitting next to Hak Ja Han.

I saw Sammy Pak for the first time when my MFT team was taken to the Pak business, Gene's Deli, in Arlington Virginia in 1979 or 1980. We were allowed to have anything, Mrs Pak told us. I noticed Sammy who was about 13 or 14 and wondered why he looked completely different to the other Pak children. It was a question that gnawed away in the back of my mind.

The next time I saw Sammy was in Gloucester in 1987. He was there to participate in Ocean Challenge with the other 2nd gen Korean teenagers and young adults. My husband was captain of Moon's fishing yacht, the New Hope, and I was with him to care for the boat. Sammy was then 21 years of age and I remember the night I saw him so clearly - even now, 26 years later. He was boisterous, joking and loud. He was stocky, short and muscular with dark skin and a face that was round and fleshy, not lean like the Pak siblings. He looked nothing like a Pak child and I would know. Jin Sung Pak spent a week sitting next to me in our MFT van to make a condition for his sister Hoon Sook, who was auditioning for the Ballet Russe in Monte Carlo.

When I learned in 1998 that Sammy was actually the son of Sun Myung Moon it all made sense and that gnawing question I had been carrying for almost 20 years was answered. Rev Moon's lame attempts to explain this shocking revelation (the concubine providence) was the last straw for many Unificationists, including myself. I did what was sorely needed: I left the Unification Church.
