My Top 5 Favorite Fics I Wrote in 2023
I thought this might be a little self-indulgent to do, but hey, you know what, I'm proud of the things I've written this year, and so I wanted to highlight some of the ones I keep going back to reread, especially for any readers who might be new to my stuff. As always, thank you to everyone who welcomed me into the fold and who cheers me on with every new and unique and sometimes strange ships and plots I bring forth!!
Scratching The Itch (BJ/Hawkeye, 44k)
The OG, my very first fic in the fandom, the one that kicked off all the ridiculousness that was to come. Loved getting to start off all my twists and turns and set the scene for the long haul forward. Looking back, there’s several things I’d love to tweak or polish up, but I think I’m going to leave it as it is. If anything, it’ll be really wonderful to see where I came from, especially as I approach my first anniversary in this fandom.
I’d Give Up Forever to Touch You (BJ/Sidney, BJ/Hawkeye, 24k)
Probably the best example this year of the kinds of concise, character/relationship-centric narratives that I’m so passionate about writing. I loved getting to dig into BJ’s complicated thought processes, to write Sidney through BJ’s eyes—even though there was a rich internal monologue running at all times for Sidney that only I was privy to—and to explore so so many headcanons I have for Beej in particular (autistic BJ be upon you).
To Be Kissed Upon The Eyes (Sidney/Hawkeye/Sam, 15k)
One of my favorite examples of me taking a rare ship and just fucking running with it. Sam has a grand total of Three (3) fics on AO3, and getting the chance to build so much of him from scratch was a delight. I loved getting to write a well-established romance between older characters as well as how bringing someone new into the midst of that can shift the dynamic.
To Have and To Hold (BJ/Hawkeye, BJ/Peg, 17k)
This was my first time spent exploring gender-centric headcanons for Hawkeye and another example of my extremely early writing, when I was weaving so much of my settings purely on the fly. I love looking back on it and reflecting on how much my characterization has become more enriched since then. I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about how writing the initial uncertainty but shared compassion between metamours makes me exceedingly tender.
Just Keep Your Eyes on Me (BJ/Hawkeye/Sidney, Sidney/Hawkeye, 10k)
I didn’t expect a kinktober piece to make me as happy to reread as this one does. I had the chance to dig into a BJ that is unlike my preferred iteration but that reflects fanon more strongly, which was an excellent writing exercise. Mostly I loved writing a strong established bond outside of the standard BJ/Hawk, making BJ the outsider looking in rather than Sidney. It’s good for Beej, being off his rhythm from time to time, taking a solid year of not admitting what he wants and turning it into a weapon.
Thank you again to everyone for reading, and I look forward to bringing you so much more in 2024!!
