it’s not unusual, for him  --  black eye, bloody lip;  by the time he’s thirty, he probably won't be able to smile.  not without those white scars stretched over his lips.  too many busted faces, too young to take the beating, scabs too frequently picked.   ( his mother’s handiwork, or another kid’s -- ? )

whatever.  shitty day, either way.  cuts haven't healed yet, blood’s smeared all over his sleeves.  hasn’t had his medicine yet, either, ‘cause the joint in his pocket ain’t got spit on it and the vodka in his bag’s still sealed tight.
