Found some old pics from a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Welcome to the sand crab disco!!
My sisters and I call sand crabs tickles because we used to dig holes at the beach and fill them with water and crabs and then stick our feet in and they would crawl over our feet and tickle them
thats pretty cute actually. im not gonna make any jokes out of it. just everyone come look at this cute little story
Imagine mermaid but as different kinds of crab. Hermit crab mermaid or sand crab mermaid for example.
When I found this Pacific Sand Crab (Emerita analoga) on an Oregon beach I had no clue what it was. Well, I had some idea that it was a crustacean of some sort but that was the extent of it. This one must have been injured or had something wrong with it because it was just hanging out on the surface of the sand. Normal behavior would have been for it to burrow backwards below the surface to hide. They live in the swash zone, the area of the beach washed by a wave after it has broken. There they hang out just beneath the surface of the sand where they snag food with their antennae that they pull back down to scrape into their mouth. They, in turn, are preyed upon by shorebirds, fish and sea otters.
Went to the beach and I found a lot of sand crabs this time. I love holding them, but when they start trying to burrow between my fingers is when I scream and throw them at the ocean
