Random fun fact about sand lilies since you mentioned you are a plant lover in your previous post:

The sea daffodil is protected in many Mediterranean countries due to population decline from tourism, so yeah unfortunately we shouldn't pluck them 😭💔

That’s fascinating and important to know about sea daffodils, that’s why we really should leave nature just as we found it instead of taking “mementos” when we’re out hiking or swimming … one never knows when we may be endangering a species in decline. I really hope that more is done to protect the sea daffodil, now you’ve piqued my curiosity about them! Some of my favorite species live in vernal pools in California where 90% have been lost in development over the past hundred years, so it’s vital to support conservation efforts to keep these and so many other natural habitats safe.

2 May 2025 - Friday Field Notes

Another day, I can't tell if I'm sun-burnt or sun-kissed. Talking to strangers, pulling weeds out of the grass like lice out of someone else's hair.

In the land of boom or bust, yesterday's rain was a blessing. The morning ground damp and supple, perfect for shovels or a manicure of dirt underneath your nails.

Splinters. Chicken wire scratches. Cracked leather boots holding on for one more season.

Under the pageantry of fruit trees, most of my friends are still sleeping. Small specks and shoots of green that go unnoticed, trampled on. At least until their generosity gets too big to ignore.

There's no shade on the prairie. And we're all just waiting for the magnificent burn of the sun's kiss.

Today in Flora as I walk The Stink-Haver

These are popping up all over the river trail here in Bend. They are called Sand Lily, Leucocrinum montanum

The Sea Daffodil (Panacratium maritimum) is an endangered member of the family, Amaryllidaceae.  Native to the Mediterranean and the southern shores of the Black Sea, the Sea Daffodil grows in sandy dunes just above the high tide line.  Its flowers have a very subtle fragrance that only becomes apparent on windless summer nights.

Due to its increasing rarity, it has been given protected status in much of its range, but continues to lose vital habitat to tourist development.  

Sadly I saw many tourists picking it during my last visit to Greece.  :(
