A stake or the sun can turn her to dust
A collection of MDZS junior-centric modern AU stories, by Sanguis. Title from the fic tags.
So, this fall I read four short modern college AU stories by Sanguis (@bel-ennui), and the heartfelt, comedy-of-errors tone was just what I needed in the moment. The first three (The Tides Turn Quickly, Yearning, and Where The Day Flows) are all different takes on the same premise, that it's spring 2020, the junior cultivators are college students, and that it's not common knowledge that Professors Wei and Lan are married. Watching the interconnected relationships be accidentally revealed three times over in three different ways filled me with an immense amount of glee, and the fourth story, We Gather Here, is about going to the first family gathering post-lockdown with your boyfriend, and made a fitting coda.
The bookcloth is made from some leftover fabric a friend gave me from mask-making, fittingly enough. The endpapers are from my wife's stash of painting experiments with gel-plate printing. The title and cover image were applied with acrylic paint and a Cricut-cut vinyl stencil.
This was my first quarto-sized book (letter-sized paper cut and folded into a quarter of the sheet instead of half) and it's a supremely satisfying size to make! This is just under 20,000 words in 172 pages. I've definitely got a few more projects in mind in the 20-40k word length.
