When my child asks one day, “is there any upside to being a Jew? It seems like all suffering and discrimination.” Ill be able to answer that all the negatives about being Jewish are well studied and proven over thousands of years, but strangely the positives, even though they’re ephemeral and unproven, seem to be just as immutable.
There’s no rhyme or reason why Jews are so above average successful. Why they survive suffering with flying colors, why they produce so much innovation and art and technology and medicine and culture… but it’s hard to argue with. It’s like the opposite of gravity with Jews. The world tries to hold us down and we just keep rising above. How do you explain that to a kid?
