When my child asks one day, “is there any upside to being a Jew? It seems like all suffering and discrimination.” Ill be able to answer that all the negatives about being Jewish are well studied and proven over thousands of years, but strangely the positives, even though they’re ephemeral and unproven, seem to be just as immutable.

There’s no rhyme or reason why Jews are so above average successful. Why they survive suffering with flying colors, why they produce so much innovation and art and technology and medicine and culture… but it’s hard to argue with. It’s like the opposite of gravity with Jews. The world tries to hold us down and we just keep rising above. How do you explain that to a kid?

Katie Holt x gn!reader

She’s supposed to be listening to you right now. After all, you just got back from a mission, and you’re telling her how it went. Oh, well. You’ll have to repeat it later because right now, she’s too busy basking in your presence.

Pidge, or Katie, as she only allows you to call her that, hums softly in agreement to whatever you just said, her golden eyes staring at the freckles adorning your face. Whenever you feel insecure about the flecks across your skin, she is quick to reassure you that you are beautiful. 

One of her favorite things to do when you’re both in bed, ready to sleep and drowsy, is connect your freckles. She guides a gentle finger over your face, drawing out constellations, planets and their moons, and the phrase “I love you.” She does love you, by the way. She loves you a lot.

“Sunshine, you seem distracted, is something wrong?” You’re curious and loving voice brings Pidge back to the present. 

She just smiles at you and shakes her head. “You’re so pretty.”

Your face flushes red, and you chuckle. “Is that really what you’ve been thinking about this whole time?” She nods her head ‘yes.’ You blush again, a gentle smile working its way onto your face. “I love you, Katie.”

“I love you too, Y/n.” And she means it to her last breath.

eh... maybe I made the wrong call on this relationship biz. Let myself be optimistic and enthusiastic about a stranger for a few weeks. Should’ve known that doesn’t work. It’s just not my life. It’s nobody’s fault, probably. I’m sure I seemed a little alarming for actually caring. I mean... pffft. I can’t just meet someone who seems amazing and smart and talented and passionate and want get to know them better. Who does that? Heck, maybe he feels the same way about me and we both just suck at communication. Not that that helps. I can’t handle the anxiety. I just wish I was surprised. I still wear my soul on my sleeve and since that’s always going to be too much for everyone else... well... it’s enough for me.  anyway. Excuse me while I go chant “relationships only distract from art” over my eggnog for a bit. Then I’ll turn up the cheesiest old dubstep I can find and get back to work.
