Few months ago, one of my cats knocked a vintage chalkware dog sculpture off of its shelf and it was mostly destroyed. I was especially gutted, as that was a piece I had picked out to memorialize my passed K9 partner, Taeryn.
Now, these figures aren't especially hard to find; they pop up on ebay and etsy often. But the sheer *variety* of molds used to make those old, rather cheap, plaster statues was *staggering*, and I am pretty particular about the specific mold I liked in the most common ones. It takes a pretty long time for them to show up in the collectibles market, sometimes. I'm still looking for *that* specific figure to appear, in fact.
But while keeping watch for that specific sculpt, I found another that was just as lovely, and a sculpt I hadn't seen before. The proportions and features even matched my Taeryn a little bit better than the one I'd gotten for him before. It was an ashtray model, so it had a well for ashes and such, which gave me an idea. I found a lovely bamboo "tea cannister" that was large enough to hold his ashes, that fit nearly perfectly into that ashtray well... and thus, Taeryn's memorial is now complete.
Big News for Dasha!
Heading over to Clark County Public Works tomorrow morning to sit in on a Search and Rescue training session with Dasha. Hoping she has what it takes to become a new partner for one of their SAR teams!
She lacks intense prey drive (mostly wants to make friends with cats and chickens) but she is exceptionally food motivated and learns new things very quickly. We’ll see how it goes!
