The final two photographs of 21 year-old Sarah Goode, posted to her Instagram account on June 6th, 2014.

On that evening, Sarah left her 4 year-old daughter with her mother so she could attend a party in Medford, New York. While there, she posted the above picture (on the right) of her smiling and enjoying the party with her friends. It was typical for Sarah and her friends to be out all night when they got together, so Sarah’s mother initially did not worry when she did not return home that night. However, when Sarah failed to show up at her nephew’s birthday party the next day, her family knew something was amiss. After an unsuccessful search for her, Sarah’s family reported her missing on June 8th, 2014.

Two days later, Sarah’s car was found abandoned about a mile from her home. Inside of it, investigators spotted a bloody handprint and numerous other blood stains. This discovery prompted a massive search by volunteers in the surrounding area. On the evening of June 12th, 2014, a searcher found Sarah’s half-naked body in a wooded area located less than a mile away. An autopsy revealed that she had been raped and stabbed over forty times.

Over a month later, 19 year-old Dante Taylor was arrested and charged with raping and murdering Sarah. Taylor attended that same party in Medford on the night of June 6th, and cell phone records revealed that he and Sarah had been communicating via calls and texts earlier that day. Additionally, forensic testing revealed that the bloody handprint in Sarah’s car belonged to Taylor.

It is believed that Sarah’s untimely death was the result of a sexually motivated attack. At the trial, the prosecution said that Taylor was angry that night because Sarah had rejected his sexual advances. As a result, Taylor dragged Sarah out to the woods, raped her, beat her so hard that a piece of metal was found lodged in her skull, and stabbed her to death. The jury found Taylor guilty on all counts and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In October 2017, he was found dead in his jail cell. He reportedly died by suicide.

Sarah E. Goode: A business woman and inventor. Her and her carpenter husband owned a furniture store and to meet the needs of their clients invented a folding bed that helped their clients maximize their space in small living quarters. The piece was both a fully functioning bed and roll top desk with storage.

Sarah Boone: A dressmaker who patented an innovation for the ironing board. She realized that the current ironing board, a plank of wood balanced between two chairs or tables, caused unwanted creasing in material when ironing. She created a narrow curving board that allowed the user to iron sleeves and neck lines without adding creases to the fabric.

Both women were born during slavery but it is unknown if they were slaves. They lived in a time when Black Americans had to be innovative to survive.

Over the course of this month I will be highlighting 28 Black inventors who have changed the course of history but often do not get their recognition. Sarah Goode was born into slavery in 1850. After he family was granted their freedom from the Civil War the family moved to Chicago, Illinois where she lived until her adulthood. It was in Chicago where she met her husband Archibald Goode and had six children. As an adult Goode opened up a furniture store where she realized a majority of her soutoumers could not afford furniture and did not have enough room in their homes to have much furniture. This is where she came up with the idea for her invention, leading her to become the first Black woman to receive a patent. With the understanding that a majority of her customers could not afford to place a bed in their house Sarah Good decided to create the folding bed, adjacent to what the Murphy bed is now. This bed allowed for the bed itself to be folded up when not being used and it would be a desk where people would be able to work. This invention would allow Goode to become the first Black woman inventor to receive a patent, allowing the glass window to be broken for many other Black women inventors. They found Sarah's body. The coroner revealed that it was her. This is so fucking sickening to me. Who would even consider hurting a little girl like that? Especially one who has a little girl of her own at home. That girl never did anything to anyone. She was so sweet, and vulnerable. There is a lot of evil in this world and this really opened my eyes up to it. It's always interesting to hear about missing people or homicide stories, but when it happens to someone you know - someone you've had conversations with, someone you've seen light up when they spoke about something that made them happy, someone who at least pretended to give a shit about what you had to say - then it's completely different. It becomes almost nightmarish. It makes me rethink all my choices. I'm actually heartbroken. We weren't especially close but she was always such a sweetheart to me and I'm baffled. Rest in peace Sarah. You deserved so much better than this.

I don't normally post this type of stuff, but this hits way too close to home. A 21 year old girl was reported MISSING on June 8th, 2014. She was last seen at a party with friends on Friday night (June 6th) in Shirley, NY.  Her car was found parked on the wooded side of a residential street, about a mile from her home in Medford, NY. The license plates were bent, hiding the numbers.  She has a huge family, including a 4-year-old daughter, and many friends who she is close to. She hasn't contacted anybody, and her phone goes straight to voicemail.  If you think you may have seen Sarah, or know anything about this case, PLEASE call 1-800-220-TIPS or [phone]  Her loved ones and even those who didn't know her are holding out hope that she is found unharmed.
