Name Meaning: S. L. Wood's Flesh Lizard
Classification: Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Coelophysoidea
Sarcosaurus was yet another early theropod, however this time from the Jurassic Period, during the Sinemurian stage, about 194 million years ago. It was found in the Lower Lias of England. It was about three meters long and is known from partial hip, femur, and back bones. It's classification is confusing; it was originally put as a megalosauroid, then a ceratosaur, and now is listed as a coelophysoid. It's partial skeletal fragments means it's hard to classify it in one of those three groups; more fossil evidence is necessary to be sure. This genus also had another species assigned to it, S. andrewsi, however the species is now considered dubious as the fossil for S. andrewsi consists of different bones than S. woodi, making it impossible to compare the two.
