Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Imagine getting pregnant with dodecuplets. Now imagine carrying those 12 children for almost a year before giving birth. Now imagine each individual embryo has its own placenta. That's what pregnancy is like for the Brazilian guitarfish, or raia-viola! Females mate in March, but the embryos don't start growing until December when she moves to warmer waters. By the time they're born, the pups are about 29 cm (11 in) long-- almost half the size of their mother!

the paper which described this animal made some very bold claims about its anatomy and phylogenetic position. others have questioned these interpretations after looking at the scans used. as always more research is needed
