If there was one thing that Sasuke Uchiha had never been good at, it was letting go of the past. Letting go of all the things that had once hurt him. This included all of the past relationships that he had been in, all the heartbreak that he had endured. It ruled his relationship now, and it was slowly leading to his feeling of hopelessness in another relationship.

Sasuke had gone from one person to another, telling himself that things would be different. Despite you telling him over and over that things would be different with you, those voices in his head were always there.

There had been nothing but lies, cheating, and what felt like the world hating him in the past and he couldn't see the world any other way. As much as it hurt you to see him that way, you didn't plan on leaving this man to fend for himself when it came to this. You were going to change his outlook, no matter what it took to do so.

The scars that it had left on his heart and on his life made you want to find every last girl before you and tell them how they had really missed out. Sasuke may be a little rough around the edges, but underneath all of that there was an amazing heart that was just looking for the right person to bring it out of him.

You had sat him down so many times before and asked him what was going on. You wanted to know everything, despite his reluctance to tell you everything. It had caused many arguments between the two of you, but you wouldn't let it get between you. You never let him give up like he wanted to many times before.

You had told him over and over again that the best way to get over his past was to talk about it. It was a way to get it off of his chest, but in the normal Uchiha fashion, he was stubborn.

But slowly you could tell that you were starting to get through to him. You were slowly starting to break down those walls. Every argument on the subject lately had been ending just a little bit quicker, ending with just a little bit more coming out of him.

It was a matter of time until he would finally let you in and you couldn't wait for the day. The day that you could finally help him repair the broken heart that he had been walking around with for far too long. The savior of the youngest Uchiha.

The constant reminders that you gave him made him begin to realize that he was letting these things rule his life when he should be doing the opposite of it. Your reminders floated around his head even when he wasn't thinking about the situation. You told him over and over that the things that were in his past were now just that... in the past. Those memories shouldn't be ruling his life now, they were something that shouldn't affect his current memories.

Emotional distance was something that Sasuke had always had, since the day that the two of you had met. You had been determined to break down those walls. Working every day, tirelessly, to get through to him.

Sasuke was afraid to get attached. Every woman that he had been attached to in the past had just shown him that he should never have been in the first place. They all just hurt him in the long run. Why should this be any different?

"It's not that simple, Y/n." He would slam his hand into the wall and watch as you jump, upset with himself for scaring you like he had. "I can't go through this again. I just can't."

Your anger would sometimes get the best of you, but he never blamed you. Sasuke knew just how hard he could be to be with. "You can't do what, Sasuke? You can't be in a relationship? You can't let people in?" You knew that your words were cutting into him, but it was what he needed to finally let those worries fade away. He needed to face the truth. "You're scared of getting your heart broken again... and I'm telling you that I won't do that. I'm not those other girls."

Those words would always make his eyes widen, realizing that you were right. You weren't the others, they were just bad memories that he was letting control him. "I-I'm sorry." His eyes would well up, but only after you had had this same argument many times. "I know you're not them. I'm just damaged. I'm damaged goods and you deserve so much more."

The more he opened his eyes the more that he realized that you were a blessing for him. The more he finally let those walls down. The more he let those memories finally drift away from him, finally stopped them from ruining everything.

He began to realize that you were so much different than all the others that were in his life before. You weren't as secretive. You didn't leave for days on end without telling him where you were going. You didn't openly flirt with every man that came your way. You were a real woman who knew how to be in an adult relationship.

And he began to realize that even if your relationship did come to and end, it wouldn't be like the last. There would be heartbreak, but there wouldn't be the horrible memories to hold onto. He wanted nothing more than to make this work. He wanted to risk it, he wanted to feel alive. A healthy relationship for once in his life with a woman that he truly felt he could love.

The emotional distance that he always had slowly began to lower. He was actually able to tell you that he loved you back. He was even one to say it first.

You had known him since you had both been in the academy. You had helped him when it came to his Clan's massacre. You had been there this whole time, but he had blocked out all those memories when he had let his rage and anger take over.

But little did he know, one of the items that he carried around with him, one of the things that he could never quite place where he had gotten but always kept at his side, was from you. A necklace that had a single leaf as the charm. You had given it to him as kids to remind him that the Leaf was always going to be his home and he had kept it with him since.

It made its home on the end of his katana, dangling off of it just enough to remind him that it was there. When he had been in the toughest of battles when he left the village it was always in his view to remind him to keep going. Even when he wanted to destroy Konoha and all it stood for, he kept that necklace.

And when those walls were finally broken down you made sure to remind him that you were always going to be there. You would never leave his side, even when it seemed like things were never going to get any better for him. He replayed your words in his head over and over when he was away from you. Memories of the night that you said are always playing on loop in his mind.

He laid his head in your lap, your hand running through his hair over and over. Just the feeling of another person's tender touch enough to have him melting where he was. "Sasuke," He would open his eyes and stare at you, nodding slightly to tell you that he was listening. "You know that I'll always be here for you, right?" His eyes would narrow some, confusion taking over his features.

As he opened his mouth to speak you placed a finger over his lips. "Even when you feel like you're all alone just remember that you're not, that I'll always be right here waiting for you." You looked toward the front door and smiled. "I'll be right here waiting to welcome you home." His eyes softened as he listened, not wanting to interrupt you. "And when you're feeling like nothing is going right, when you're feeling like nothing will ever change. I'll always be right here to listen to you." You smiled wide enough that your eyes closed tightly. "Don't ever forget that, alright?"

His hands would raise to you, cupping your face in them as he pulled you down toward him. His lips would caress yours, nothing but love and passion behind them as he felt warmth flooding his chest. He now truly knew what it was like to be happy, to have found that special someone.

You rushed to your next class, five minutes left to get into the room. You could do it, this was nothing, you had rushed to class with less time before and made it.

But that’s when you caught him out of the corner of your eye. The raven hair that you could never miss. Sasuke Uchiha.

When you met his eyes he moved toward you, but you kept walking, trying to make him see that you weren’t interested.

Sasuke caught you with ease, wrapping his arm around your shoulder as he kept pace with you. “The two of us need to have a chat.”

It was times like this that you wished you hadn’t always had to have a coffee in your hands. Your books filled one while a drink filled the other, keeping you from pushing him off of you. “I’m in a little bit of a hurry Sasuke, I don’t have time for this right now.”

He huffed as you stopped outside the classroom that you were due into. He caught the sight of a man with long brown hair and lavender eyes. He was glaring at him and Sasuke pulled you into him, placing a soft kiss to your temple before letting you go. “I’ll meet you at your dorm later tonight. We’re not going to ignore this talk.”

You were taken aback by the public display of affection that Sasuke had just given you. He had always been the one to say that you were friends with benefits and nothing more, he had made it explicitly clear when you had started sleeping with each other.

You said nothing but nodded as you watched him sling his jacket over his shoulder and walk away, readjusting the beanie that covered his head.

Her face changed as realization hit her. “He knows.” The small smile that Sasuke had worn when he walked away from you had sent chills down your spine. You knew as well as she did that he had somehow found out about Neji and you. Sasuke had never been one that had a good temper.

You nodded and let your attention fall on the professor as he began the lecture. You were barely able to focus as you felt his eyes on you, he watched you, clearly angry that Sasuke had done what he had done.

When the clock finally hit time to leave you tried to jet out of there as quickly as you could, but that’s when you heard your name. You turned to see Neji standing behind you, his eyes wandering your figure as he leaned against the desk behind him. “So, what’s up with Sasuke and you?”

You slowly turned and took a deep breath. “Neji...” You didn’t want to have to say this, but you knew it was going to be the only thing that would help the situation. “I know you probably didn’t think so at the time, but this was a one time thing... I’m sorry.”

Neji didn’t say another word before turning around and walking away. You had known that those words had hurt him, and he had never been one that would talk bout his feelings very often.

You sighed and grabbed your books from the table before walking out the door. As you turned the corner you had nearly run into him. Sasuke had known your schedule, he had always kept track of things like that. He grabbed your arm and pulled you with him. “We’re talking now. I know you don’t have another class for a couple hours.”

You followed him without hesitation, knowing that there was no getting out of this.

The walk from the class building to the dorms seemed like it would never end. The annoyance radiating off Sasuke as he held his tongue, but once he had you in your dorm room it all came out. The flood gates had opened and you had never seen the Uchiha express himself so much.

“We had one rule...” He walked forward and you instinctively stepped back, bumping into the wall behind you. “One rule! No other relationships!” His hand lifted and you almost flinched as it hit the wall beside you, his figure looming over you. “And now you’re fucking some other dude?”

You had never been this nervous around him before. “Sasuke, I-”

You looked over at the desk that the other medical ninja sat at. “You guys can handle them for a little while right? I’m going to go have lunch.” When they nodded back to you you linked your arm in Sasuke’s. “Let’s go have lunch.”

He smiled and led you from the hospital. “I say we eat at home. I’ll cook.”

As the front door of the house you shared opened the familiar atmosphere made you take a deep breath in. Before you could even say another word you felt Sasuke’s arms wrap around your waist, his hands slowly caressing the fabric that adorned your body. Sasuke knew that his feelings were wrong. He had never wanted this to happen, but he knew as well as the next that love can’t be controlled. He had promised Itachi that he would always take care of you and the child you and Itachi shared, but he had never meant it this way.

When Sasuke has decided to come back to the village after the war everyone had wondered why. That’s when they remembered that you had been there. It hadn’t surprised anyone that Sasuke had come back for you. Even before Itachi had left his family Sasuke had never hidden his likeness for you. The only thing that had surprised the village was that he hadn’t taken you and left again.

You had never realized it. You had been oblivious to the whole thing. Your love for Itachi had never left you. Sure, being around Sasuke had given you those same butterflies that Itachi had when the two of you met.

Sasuke had hated the guilt that his feelings gave him. He was betraying Itachi. Not only was he betraying Itachi, but he was also betraying his niece. Her father had never gotten to say goodbye to her and if Sasuke acted on his feeling she would never understand.

As the two of you entered your home he lifted his head, pinching back the feelings that were bubbling up inside him. As he saw the instant happiness coat your face at the sight of him his guilt pinged him even more. What was he doing?

You sat on the edge of your bed and lifted the small picture frame from the nightstand. It held a picture of the two of you. It was from the day that he had proposed to you. The joy that your faces each held weighed on you. You had never even gotten a chance to become an Uchiha.

After a couple of minutes Sasuke noticed you hadn’t come back. D/n had placed herself on the couch after climbing down from Sasuke’s arms and her sleepiness had overtaken her. He took the opportunity to approach you, hoping that he could have a couple of words with you.

A small knock jumped you as you clutch onto the memories that the picture held. You placed the picture back down before speaking. “Yea?”

“It’s me.” Sasuke’s solemn voice sent shivers down your spine.

“Come in.”

He slowly opened the door, peeking his head in before making an entrance. As he entered you moved farther back on the bed, leaning against the headboard. He walked up to the bed and sat on the end opposite of you. “Can we talk about something?”

He pulled your legs to yourself, crossing them in front of you. “What do you want to talk about?”

“I just... I have all these feelings that I need to get out.” He stopped, his brain telling him that this wasn’t the right thing to do. “I’m sorry.” He looked away from you.

You tried to reassure him, a smile spreading across your face. He knew that he could talk to you about anything, but something was holding him back. “Sasuke, just tell me.”

“I can’t... it’ll betray my brother.” He gritted his teeth. “I never wanted to do that. I should have known that I couldn’t be the one to take care of the two of you without this happening.”

“Without what happening Sasuke?” Your heart threatened to come up through your throat. “I don’t understand.”

“Y/n, ever since I met you I’ve had these... feelings. These things have caused me more guilt than I ever thought possible.” He sighed. “When Itachi brought you home all those years ago is when it started. You were everything that I had wished for... and he had you.”

“There were so many times that I had wanted to steal you away from him. So many times that I just wanted to lay claim to what could be mine. But I couldn’t do it to him. I always looked up to Itachi. He was always there for me.”

The confusion across your face was becoming very evident. “Sasuke, what are you saying?”

“I don’t know what to say Y/n... what if I say it and it screws things up. D/n and you are the most important people in my life and I couldn’t imagine losing the two of you. I’d be completely lost without-”

You reached forward and put your finger to his lips, stopping his babbling. “Sasuke, stop. You’re going to bust a gasket here. Just tell me, nothing will make the two of us leave. You’re the only family the two of us have left.”

He was hesitant, fear shone in his eyes, but he took a deep breath and let it out. “Y/n, I love you. I’ve loved you for a long time. I’ve wanted to be with you since the day I met you.” He gulped hard, hurting his throat. “I couldn’t imagine trying to take you away from Itachi, but now’s my time. I completely understand if you want me to leave. Itachi is the father of your child, but he’s gone now.”

Tears stung your eyes as you thought of the late Uchiha. “Sasuke,” You looked away from him. The hurt in his eyes as he jumped up from the bed pained you. You hadn’t meant for his name to come out that way. You had always had an underlying feeling for him. You had hidden them well, your feeling for Itachi overpowering them, but he was right. Itachi was gone and he was never coming back. What was the use of hiding them now?

You stood from the bed and walked in front of him. You could feel the blame that he was putting on himself radiating off of him. His whole body jumped as your arms made their way around his neck, your hands overlapping each other on the back of it. As your lips touched his those same butterflies that had been bothering him for years came at a force like no other. His lips moved against yours, pulling you in.

He smiled into your lips as your kiss slowed. “Is this your way of telling me that you feel the same?” His voice was weak, afraid that you would reject him.

“Just kiss me you, idiot.” A chuckled came from your voice. The sound of it was angelic to him, he wanted nothing more than to feel your touch on him once again. And he did exactly as you told him, placing all of his passion behind it, showing you exactly how much he truly loved you.
