Wait! Are SATs curved?!

Yep.

It's because "every test is different" in difficulty, supposedly, so the collegeboard or ETS or whoever inflicts this horror upon us, whoever they are, they say, "oh look, more people did really well in math section in January! That means the test must've been easy in the math section."

Therefore, getting one wrong counts as a larger deduction of points. I got a 750 in math for getting 2 wrong. 50 points deduction. I say that the curve screwed me over because if you look at that chart, getting two wrong should still be a 770, 20 points above the score that I got. And if I got those 20 points, my score would have been a 2100 instead of a 2080.

I'm using math as my example to explain this curving thing, but my scores for reading and writing were also curved down as well. I'm not going to insert pictures of the critical reading and writing charts because I think you get the idea with the math example.

Anyway, back to how I was screwed over for the rest of the test: I got a 650 in critical reading for getting 9 wrong omit 1, and I calculated from a chart in the blue book that for the number of right, wrong, and omitted that I got for critical reading on the January SAT, it should have been either a 670 or 680, which is another 20-30 points robbed from me.

And for writing, I got 3 wrong and omitted 1 for a score of 680. But according to my blue book, I should have gotten at least a 740; since I got a 9 on the essay, I'm guessing my score should have been about a 710-720 (but DISCLAIMER: I don't know how to factor in my essay score, which was a 9. I'm just guessing what my score would have been without a curve). But either way, that's another 30-40 points deducted from my entire SAT score.

*Fun fact: for my May SAT score, I got a 710 in writing, but I got the same number of questions right, wrong, and omitted. The May test must have been an "easier" test, aka it wasn't jacked up from all the smart people. The smart people who screw up the curve for me in January had already taken the test back in January and didn't have to retake in May.

Anyway, I hope I explained curving pretty well, because this is how it works, at least to my knowledge.

Sharing is Caring?

The common phrase usually used to guilt trip someone into sharing something with you is popular among many. I use it to elict food and drink from my friends who would probably share with me anyway. Today, I took my final SAT Reasoning test and the prompt dealt with IF ONE SHOULD CARE ABOUT PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES? I personally believe so and my three point, despite only having time to write two of them, were the shared wealth of knowledge and how we should share it, main example, Einstein and the atomic bomb, the effects of global economy examples by the great depressiona and the depression following World War II, and my final point was going to be that every person in the world is a potential immigrant to the United States so why would we want to disregard possible citizens? Again I was not able to write my last point but oh well. The essay isn't the only thing taken into consideration when the writing section is scored.

Besides these points, one must also consider the situation that America is in right now. We are trillions of dollars in debt partially because of our assistance in foreign countries. The saying goes, "One cannot tell a man that there is a splinter in their eye without first removing the branch from their own". In other words, don't be a hypocrite and get your own stuff straight before trying to get other things done.

I believe that the creators of the SAT did relatively well with this essay topic. It pertains to today's world and is a broad subject easily discussed. Of course, I wish I had a couple of hours to write it instead of 25 minutes but thats how it goes.
