[SYSTEMS ALLIANCE] Elections in progress on Earth
via The Wards Courier Those regions of the human homeworld judged most recovered are choosing their legislators today in the planet’s first post-war elections. For Earth’s supreme rulers in the Systems Alliance Transitional Administration, today is an important milestone towards restoring their parliament and civilian government. Admiral Steven Hackett and the Systems Alliance Navy have presided over the affairs of Earth and her colonies since 2186. The military dictatorship arose out of necessity, as the trans-national Systems Alliance and its armed forces remained the sole standing organization on human-settled worlds after the Reapers’ cessation of hostilities. However, after seven years and one Five Year Plan, humanity is clamouring to return to the republican democracy model most frequently used to govern their affairs. Those regions on Earth that have been appraised as regaining 65% or more of their pre-War metrics are now given the responsibility of governing themselves once again. The Sixty Five Percent barrier refers to the critical threshold of pre-War conditions at which a given administrative region of an industrialized nation will generally be able to meet the minimal conditions for self sustainment. While the recovered regions choose their own legislatives and form their governments, the Systems Alliance will remain in full control of areas, both on Earth and the colonies, that are still rebuilding; a grating situation for the disenfranchised. Worlds like Watson and Terra Nova still contend with military rule, with no immediate plans for a similar return to civilian governance. The transient spacer population, who used to have a small number of seats in the pre-War parliaments, have also voiced their displeasure as receivers of obligations without representation after so many years. Back on the human homeworld, citizens and political parties are carefully exercising their newly restored rights. Political groups formed in the past years like Standard-Bearers -- pro-military social conservatives renowned for their members’ rebuilding efforts -- are capitalizing on the new reality of shifted borders and the contacts made across them. Members from old Systems Alliance parliamentary parties like the Earth-centric Solarists and Labour-Colonial have also mobilized in support of ideologically aligned regional parties.
A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away...Episode 38
And yet another double-header:
MY 6 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 38 (manga chaps 103 and 56):
As usual, I tried to pick moments I didn’t already choose for the original chapter, but of course it’s always more difficult when the adaptation is pretty faithful. I loved the snow festival part of the episode...the fireworks story just made me cry.
1) The Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon, savior of Earth, makes its debut. Kagura totally shutting down Pachi-kun for having a dirty mind was hilarious.
2) Shinpachi literally crawling up Madao’s “Madao” (or, according to the anime’s translation, the Dork’s “dork”)...sure, it’s the snow version, but still disturbing.
2) I think this is one of the few times I got the father-daughter vibes from these two. Most of the time I’m usually open to different interpretations.
3) The Snack Smile sculpture really should have won everything.
4) Omg this story, I cried so much even though it was totally a one-shot and we never see this couple again.
5) Seriously, I cry every time...I think I’ve seen this episode 3 times and read the chapter at least as much but I still cry every single freaking time during this part.
6) I loved these new ending credits. I want a 3Z spin-off SO BAD.
SHIPS TALLY:
Gintoki x Sacchan: I’m sure she has different versions of that sculpture in her house.
Zura x Elizabeth: look at all the effort Zura took to honor his beloved!
Sacchan x Otae OR Gintoki x Otae: both pairings are applicable in this scenario.
Elizabeth x Sacchan: ok, this was NOT in the manga...Sacchan looked like she was near completion. Lmfao.
Shinpachi x Hasegawa: see moment #2. I know it’s technically not the real Hasegawa, but feels wrong to leave them off the list.
Disclaimer: Gintama is not only about shipping. Gintama is hilarious, clever, exciting, poignant, heart-breaking, loving, brilliant, and just completely unbelievably amazing. It is only due to Sorachi-sama’s immense generosity that I am able enjoy Gintama on an extra another level, the shippy level, and I am forever grateful for that. GINTAMA IS LIFE AND LOVE.

[EARTH] Humans Vote Eagerly, Peacefully
via Spotlight on Earth Citizen spirit was in evidence today as the first election period of the post-Reaper era came to a close on Earth. Amidst concerns of unrest in several other regions, the city of Haiphong in the newly-restored nation of Vietnam is showing no such worry. In the South-East Asian country’s center of administration, citizenry have been exercising their restored rights in uplifting, almost jubilant mood. The results of this traditional human means of appointing leadership will be announced soon, but for now it is considered a testament to the success of rebuilding efforts, both physical and political, that the operation has proceeded so smoothly.
[EARTH] Freedoms’ Rebirth Rallies For Elections
via New York State Times WASHINGTON-BALTIMORE - A century old secessionist force has reappeared on the UNAS’ political scene as it prepares for the regional elections in August. The Freedoms’ Rebirth party is campaigning for a restored United States of America, separate of the former United North American States that merged Mexico, the USA and Canada together a century ago. Its founder, Dr. Benson Heimerschmitt, whose great-grandfather was a commander with the Freedoms First movement of the Second American Civil War, is promoting this historical connection as part of his campaign. The party's ultimate goal is to include the entire breadth of old USA within its planned borders, but poll numbers suggest they would gain seats only in the Atlantic North-East UNAS region where the movement is centered. "The fact that there was a civil war fought over the formation of UNAS tells us that the government of those days had failed a significant portion of its populace when it moved forward with the forced merger,” Heimerschmitt commented to our reporters. “It failed to address the concerns of citizenry like my great-grandpappy, who found resonance with Freedoms First better than with president Kaitlin Cheung and her party. “That mistake can be addressed now, as the Systems Alliance prepares to trust us with our governance again. Freedoms' Rebirth wants to keep the power close and at the ground, right here where the president's office is just an hour or two's commute away, not across the continent in Vancouver or Mexico City. I say, let us govern ourselves and right wrongs, and not blindly believe that a politician a thousand miles away who hasn't walked in our shoes knows it better than us!" A resurgence of separatism has raised concerns both at home within the UNAS and abroad. Freedoms' Rebirth campaigns on issues considered to be fringe, but even one region out of the old UNAS with strong secessionist sentiments could jeopardize UNAS' return. Alien commentators warn of the possibility of renewed sectarian competition and even conflict on Earth, right below the Citadel, and the effects it could have upon galactic commerce and stability.
[CRIME] Lunar Heist Foiled
via Alliance News Network ARMSTRONG - A daring heist on Earth's moon Luna has attempted to rob it of an important historical human artifact. The flag of the United States of America, planted during the historic Apollo 11 mission onto Luna's soil, was the intended target of the thieves. Museum of Spaceflight security discovered the criminals in middle of cracking open a secure vault, where the flag is held. The two centuries old fabric is held in vacuum and darkness to shelter it from weathering from hostile elements and unfiltered sunlight. The museum's policy has been to place coloured replicas of the original flag onto the protected landing site, where sunlight bleaches the flag's fabric over time into white. Armstrong police and SATAE military police have the perpetrators in custody, and are investigating the specifics of the heist.
