So, we have reached the finale post. I bet you all are glad. You should read it from the beginning so here is the link from the first post.
It's in this post that I finally end this long winded fangirl rant and tell you in no uncertain terms why this series needs to stay around for a long long time.
I've always thought of Ororo's as sort of a people's princess er a people's goddess. The trust, protectiveness and love she inspires is just so wonderful. You see, these characters are us. When the word of low sales hit the interwebs it sounded the call. Storm Watch has been put into effect and we are still going on strong. In these panels Pak, intentionally or unintentionally, keyed into the knee jerk reaction of people who adore Ororo Munroe and her story. #SaveStorm calls on us to defend our defender. To protect the character that has given us hope, badassness, and comfort when we all need it the most. For years we have wanted and talked about giving Storm her own solo and now we have it.
Just like these people here we got throw ourselves into the mix. With our voices, consumption power and yes even our selfies (never doubt the power of a good selfie). The people at Marvel know about the hashtag, some of them say it's raising unnecessary panic but I say differently. Marvel cancels comics at a very inconsistent fashion (She-Hulk, Electra, etc) and from the outsiders perspective it seems like you never know who is going to be next on the chopping block. Raising awareness about Storm puts Marvel in the spotlight. It reminds them that we are the people that control what we see or don't see. It gives them incentive to lift their axe-happy hand.
We have the best writer (Greg Pak) at the helm of this series. He understands Storm and cares about how her story is told. The artwork has been phenomenal (covers and in-story). These people are giving their all for this series so I think it's fair to say that we should also try out best to help out in anyway we can.
WOC and POC need Ororo Munroe. That is fact. Just like we need Kamala Khan and Robbie Reyes and Sam Wilson. In a sea of white heroes they are the buoys that help up us stay above water. They are life savers. They are reminders that we too can be heroes. I believe in people's love and admiration of Storm. Thousands of notes on previous posts state that clearly.
To give up on such an icon...a well rounded yet flawed hero...it's just not in me and I don't think it is for anyone who calls themselves fans of Storm. If the Marvel bigwigs ever do decide to cancel Storm it won't because of us. It won't be because we weren't loud enough or buy enough. It will be because they don't see what we know. It will be because they don't have the faith in Storm to save the day. It will be because they fell pray to one of the classic universal blunders: Underestimating the power of Storm (and her fans).
"....You can steal my powers...break my ankle...but unless you kill me, you'll never stop me."
