“The True Cost” by Andrew Morgan

Watching “The True Cost” really opened my eyes into the issues of sustainability within fashion across the globe. Fashion today has had a shift that only looks after big businesses, where fast fashion has transformed how fashion is bought and sold. Within the documentary, fast fashion is described to have “52 seasons a year”, created to make the industry more money, where fast turn around is needed for as cheap as possible, therefore the production of garments have to be outsourced. Brands often get to pick and choose cheaper alternative factories to make a bigger profit. Stores and companies are always in competition with their competitors on who can make the most profit, so cutting production costs by getting garments made in third world countries such as Bangladesh is the way they do this. Stores and brands want garments to be made cheaper and factories want the business to survive the next year.

The safety for workers within these factories is an issue that most people are aware of. In 2008, in a factory in Bangladesh called The Rana Plaza, as a result of basic safety measure not being taken and safety notices being ignored, the factory collapsed, killing a total of 1,138 workers. Is this the price workers have to pay for consumers obsession with fast fashion? On average these workers in Bangladesh only earn £2 a day. 3/4 worst disasters within the fashion industry took place within the same year, due to fast fashion. The global fashion industry is worth a whopping £3 trillion, so why is it we still can’t afford to pay our workers a fair wage? And guarantee equal, safe working environments?

“People Tree” is a fair trade fashion label that started 20 years ago in Japan. The label start off with the skills of the workers, and base the collection around that. Fair Trade is a citizens response to correcting the trading system. 1 in 6 people today work in some part of the fashion industry.

Thousands of acres of land in Texas are growing cotton. Due to popular human demand for the fibre, farmers are having to use pesticides and genetically engineered cotton plants to keep up. What effect does this have on our environment? Pesticides are not only having an effect on the cotton plants, but also on the workers, and we are buying into this, not just poisoning plants, but our own people. 1 farmer every half an hour uses pesticides as a weapon to end their lives due to working in these conditions. We are quickly buying into a sea of mass murder.

With fashion revenue and demand on the rise, fashion waste increases, with textile waste increasing by 10% a year. Without women and human labour, the fast fashion industry wouldn’t be making the profit they are. Watching this documentary has made me realise the importance of us being sustainable more than ever before, especially within the fashion industry. Time to say goodbye to fast fashion, stop killing of our own species for saving a couple of pounds, and say hello to being sustainable.
