SOS! Our amazing friends @swimming_in_moonlight and @hauntedluminous have teamed up with us to create @pnwprotectors! These two live on the shores of the Salish Sea and, alongside the community of whale lovers in the Pacific Northwest, have witnessed firsthand the brutal decline of the Southern Resident Orcas. The recent death of J-52 "Sonic," a two year old orca calf, has made this situation even more critical and these animals need you to be a voice for them before it's too late. "You and me. We hold the power to make changes, collectively, together. This organization’s principles are steeped in the hope that real, lasting change can be made at an individual level to help protect and save and better steward our animals and our oceans. Sonic’s (J52) death was the tipping point for PNWProtector’s launch when news surfaced of the two year old Orca’s untimely death to the heartbreaking fate of starvation. I was standing by, hoping some person behind some invisible curtain would do something about the dwindling numbers of Salmon and the disappearing Orcas, when suddenly it dawned on me that the only lasting change starts individually and collectively. Today is step one. J-52’s memorial flyer is going to be displayed everywhere that allows me to post it in their place of business. With mass awareness of the issues we face, I believe we can make giant strides to bringing the Snake River Dams down, thus resolving a huge facet of the PNW’s Salmon dilemma. The Pacific Salmon Commission predicts only 283,000 adult salmon will return this year, which would be the lowest return ever recorded. 🚨This is what extinction looks like.🚨 ⠀ Here are some of the challenges experts say 🇨🇦 Fraser River sockeye salmon are facing.⠀ ⠀ 1. Lice and salmon farms.⠀ Migrating salmon pass fish farms, and those fish farms are often infested with sea lice, which can latch onto the migrating salmon.⠀ ⠀ 2. Climate change.⠀ Climate change has led to warmer river and ocean temperatures, which have many negative impacts on salmon.⠀ ⠀ 3. Government inaction on fisheries practices.⠀ Large-scale, long-term pauses on fishing will be necessary to save salmon and understand how they are doing year-to-year without the stress of harvesting.⠀ ⠀ 4.
